side panel screw, tip

Post by mark ward » Thu Apr 25, 2013 3:15 pm

Hey I was RE-assembling the KLR after doing Shims ETC. and noticed a Mod I did a few yrs back. The Back screw on the side panel is at times a PAIN to get it WAY INSIDE the hole, and keep the washer on also. (No sex jokes intended) I got a LONGER Hex head bolt, (2-2.5inchs) and ran a nut up the threads, Then tacked welded a washer in place. Now the Head sticks out just enough that when seated I can get at it with my fingers to start it or take it out, AND the washer is ALWAYS in place. (You should lube the washer before installing the bolt so it is less harsh on the plastic. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

sub frame tip #2

When drilling threw the upper frame, if not very straight you WILL come out the side of the tube INSIDE the frame. The steel you see on the outside the frame is only about 1-1.25 inchs on each side, the there is a Skinnier tube connecting them Inside the frame, If you go threw The skinny tube, STEEL SHAVINGS WILL BE INSIDE THE FRAME, and WILL eventually drop out ONTO YOUR CHAIN? (DOWN) Use a magnet and mirror to inspect and clean out the frame to keep the shavings from DAMAGING you chain ETC ETC. When I drill steel I use a magnet INSIDE A "ZIPLOCK" Baggie, so that IT CATCHS the shavings (Most) then when I'm done, turn the bag inside-OUT, Trapping the shavings inside, Then just toss it in the trash. (Magnet kept clean) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
