my gas tank sucks
I just stopped my bike in the driveway, and the gas filler cap was
making sucking noises. I actually couldn't tell if it was sucking or
blowing, but I have to assume it was sucking.
Does anybody have an idea why it would suck like that?
This really sucks.
The tank was almost empty, as a matter of fact.
I have had everything apart. Is there something obvious where I could
have switched a hose or something to draw a constant vacuum on the tank?
Thanks for thinking about this.

This is not a new problem and more than likely your gas cap vent just needs cleaning. I d try compressed air first before removing all the little pieces inside your cap. Blow it out and you should see lots of dirt. If this doesn t fix your problem, then you will have to disassemble your cap to clean out the check valves. Be careful not to loose any of the small springs or ball bearings there.

I could let Bogdan answer this one but I think the Yahoo censors would have a field day.
Any place that dirt can come in needs to be given a shot of compressed air. I m sure you will find dirt there. You could also give it a shot of Contact Cleaner to help break up any dirt buildup.

"Contact" cleaner.
For those with "OLD SCHOOL" Minds. DO NOT use Carb cleaner, or break parts cleaner.
There are Cleaners, like Contact Cleaner Or Sensor, Cleaner designed to Not HARM, The rubber ETC., ETC. seals.
All at your local auto parts store, Many at Walmart, ETC.
KY Jelly, Used as a Water based cleaner.
In Appliance repair service, We used KY Jelly a lot on plastic and Teflon, ETC parts,
(Many cloths Dryer wheel "bearings, are not metal & have Graphite coatings. & OIL's would Harm them.)

Mark you can use anything you like for cleaning. The reason this old school mind suggested Contact Cleaner is because it works well for cleaning. It dries almost instantly and the length of time any rubber is exposed to this chemical is very minimal. You have lumped Contact Cleaner and Break Cleaner together and these are very different chemicals. Brake Cleaner will attack rubber more aggressively than Contact Cleaner and should not be used to clean any rubber parts. If you want to be 100% safe with cleaning anything rubber, maybe you should only be using water or just air. I have used Contact Cleaner on all sorts of things to help clean them for 50 years and have never had any issues. Buy a whole boat load of cleaners, as they are all on the market. It s your money and you make your choices.

Wow!
Thanks Jeff. That writeup is awesome. I'm not sure that I want to open
up the cap though. That is more complicated than the carburetor!
Amazing how much technology is packed into a gas cap.
