klr650 sidecar setup

Post by Dennis Johnson » Wed Apr 17, 2013 1:13 pm

I would like folks here with real world experience to offer their comments and suggestions on how to best set up a KLR650 with a Velorex 562 sidecar for mild off road riding. The rig runs real nice now, but it dives quite a bit on braking and the chair noses down excessively, in my opinion, on left hand turns, particularly it you give it a little front brake to ease through the turn. So I was wondering what might help. I already sent an inquiry to Progressive and Adventure Sidecar. Progressive gave me some suggested part numbers but no other comments such as on fork oil, amount, weight, etc. I have not heard back from Adventure Sidecar, but probably will later today. But I thought some KLR folks here might have some experience and suggestions on helping with my setup. The bike is a 2000 with 11,000 miles. I have a fork brace on it, but most everything else is stock. Since my only passenger is an occasional dog, I carry an extra battery and sand bags for about 80 lbs of ballast. Thanks

Great description of what the guy did that got him to the point of going over the cliff, looks like a pretty good drop so being relatively uninjured makes this guy very lucky. How he reacted after the fact could have caused problems for him as well . Once he was up his first priority should have been his bike, it could be losing all of the gas he needs to get him to safety and by the remote looking location getting himself out might be his only option. Where is his buddy. I didn't time it but it seems like there is more time elapsed from the time since he had the accident till he stopped the camera then there was between when he left his buddy and he had the accident. I didn't hear a bike go by, so did he take a different trail or did he have his own issues to deal with, also by himself because the guy that had the accident left him in the dust. It would suck to have what appeared to be quite a ride end that way but since video was posted at least it didn't end as bad as it easily could have. Have a great day........ Greg Sent from Yahoo! klr650 sidecar setup

A lot of nose dive from the chair is exactly what you should expect under those conditions. I never found front brake particularly helpful in left-hand turns. (Of course, the CW calls for front brake and throttle in right-handers, and I always found that to work pretty well.) With long travel suspension, a lot of attitude change is normal. You could stiffen up the front springs I suppose, at some cost in compliance over bumps. Eliminating front brake dive is one reason to install a leading link setup.
