moab in may???.......atten fred?
Dates:
I know in many states (area's) Most campgrounds, and other "attractions" (museums ETC ETC.) and even some restaurants and Gas staitons in tourest areas, do NOT open untill the week of Memorial day, (& close after laborday.) What is the 2-300 miles around Moab like?
And MORE roads at Higher grounds (MOUNTAIN TOPS) harder to access do to SNOW AND ICE.
My Point, While sooner sounds better right now, (sitting and looking at a ft of SNOW), If I travel 1500 miles to a new area, I would want to explore everywhere,...... So I would say the weekend after, as you & john mentioned.
STURGIS NOW?...YEE-HA, I'm sure, Looks like a county fair grounds,..... 2 weeks before or after the fair,...kind of a "ghost town".
PS. IF, I do Moan instead of Alsaska this yr., I will most likely make a big loop.
Moab, Grand canyon, CA. (death valley or?) then sweep North to the REDWOODS, AND....few more stops then Mich.

Moab is open 24/7 and is usually pretty busy from Feb Dec. We have many events that will fill up motels, restaurants and campgrounds in the local area and surrounding area. So it is best to pick a time that a big event is not scheduled. The big events in Moab are the Easter Jeep Safari, the Custom Car show, the Marathon and the Music Festival. Unless you like lots of crowds to deal with, I think you would have a better time here without the crowds. Once you are away from town, the trails are usually not crowded (except Jeep Safari). If you are camping away from town, then this is not an issue.
http://www.discovermoab.com/calendar.htm
The CMC was originally designed to allow for a time that it isn t quite so busy here, the snow has had a chance to melt at the higher passes and before the school kids are out for the summer. Anytime is a good time to come to Moab as the scenery is why most folks are here and that never really changes. When the CMC was going on, we had lots of folks coming from all sorts of different places meeting up at my shop. Since I disbanded the CMC the different groups that have come here tend to stick to their own group and there isn t the camaraderie as a group that we once had.
Speaking of Sturgis, I was on a road trip in the Sturgis area (within a day or two drive) a few years ago and found the numbers of bikes on the road to be staggering. I have no plans on ever repeating that feat anytime soon.
The SW is very scenic and coming from the NE you will appreciate the vistas and the openness of what we have here. I have been to the NW several times and also find it very beautiful and such a contrast from where I live. The SW is usually red, dry and mostly rocks and sand. The NW is mostly green, wet and lots of trees. The trip up the coast from northern California, Oregon and Washington is spectacular.
You are welcome to use my shop as a meeting place. I have a big grill if anyone wants to do the cooking. Most folks that came to the CMC would camp at the Canyonlands Campground since it had good shade trees and is centrally located to restaurants and downtown within walking distance. http://www.canyonlandsrv.com/
The last I heard there was a guy from the NE (gunny on the klrworld site) that was coming again to Moab. You might look him up if you are wanting someone to ride with.
Good luck and let me know if you need anything from me.

If you go to Moab at the end of May, there won't be any problem about finding it open for business. There will likely still be some snow-closed roads in the mountains, but if you go much later, it will be starting to get pretty hot in the desert.
Sturgis is another matter. On the Monday after Rally Week, Main Street looks like a scene of desolation from The Last Picture Show, with tumbleweeds blowing down the middle of the street. Or maybe not, now that Rev lives there. Could his presence in town be enough to keep the clubs and honky-tonks open all night, every night, all year round?

I think I saw Rev in a documentary on Sturgis. He had fake tattoos, a headband, and was doing the Burnout thing on his KLR eventually popping the Kenda. Took a while to pop. The Harley guys were muttering about the weird bike that was unclean and unwashed. The Rev knows (like every KLR rider) it is what on the inside that counts.

Once it gets to a good iced tea, change it. Of course, he gets all manner of stuff that's gone all the way to root beer or worse!
Two weeks ago, I helped him change brake fluid on a GL1800. Inside the rear brake reservoir was normally dark fluid AND
a clot of......for lack of a better description...."snot-like" substance floating in it. It was greenish and poured out with the fluid and stayed intact.
It was nasty! The fluid itself wasn't that dark, oddly.
Every once in a while, I take the top off my brake reservoirs and have a quick look on top of the rubber diaphragm/seal.
If there's any water there, I change the fluid.
In 08', I bought a new but leftover 2006 Honda 919 that'd never been outside the showroom. Zero miles.
Being two years old, I opted to change all the fluids as a matter of practice and was amazed to see a good table spoon
of water under the lid to the front brake res.

New fluid is almost clear, when it gets around the color of iced tea I think about replacing it. My KLR has 35,000 miles and it still looks healthy. -Jeff Khoury ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bogdan Swider" To: "List KLR" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> Cc: "Bogdan Swider" Sent: Monday, April 15, 2013 9:11:39 AM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Fork Oil Mussing I'll bet I'm pretty typical good at timely oil changes, ok with changing coolant and brake fluid. At the start of the recent fork oil thread, I got to thinking. I checked by records; sure enough I last poured in brake fluid at 35K miles when I installed Progressive springs and new seals. ( Please Gino, no comments calling me a pervert seal blower. ) I'm now at 79K miles working toward the big 80. Yesterday I did the change. Fred's succinct directions were useful as it's been a long time. ATF recommendations were interesting but I decided to to be conservative and go with Belray 10. A leftover pint bottle of vodka was the perfect vehicle to pour 12oz into said forks cleanly. I wonder who drank the vodka that used to be in there ? The old oil did not look bad dark but with a tinge of green remaining. Then again, I'm not sure what old fork oil should look like. When I picked up the Belray at Apex Sports, one of 3 mega-dealerships in Colorado Springs, the usual quorum of older riders was in session. One veteran Gold Wing rider was adamant that fluids were changed too often. He had 90K miles on his 9 year old Wing and he'd be dammed if he would change the brake fluid as it looked fine. What do you guys think of that ? Bogdan, who's now caught up on maintenance unless he's forgotten something.
