Funny thing that! The bike they used has a wet weight considerably higher than the listed capacity of the carrier. OOOOOPS!

The hitch carrier idea is kinda cool but I have an 05 Jeep TJ. It is about as long as it is wide. Ya, I thought the same thing when I seen it. 400lb. Total cap. It's like 1 sheet of Bounty papertowel, can clean up 1 quart of milk in one swipe,....TA DAA Magic.

I have and still use a hitch mounted carrier. The center line of the bike is 18" behind the stock '03 Chevy bumper. Hanging the 400 lbs of KLR back there really has the back of the truck ( 1/2 ton, standard cab and 8 ft bed with 5.3L engine ) squatting and the front really feels loose till you get use to it. I had put some air shocks to get the back up closer to normal ride hieght and it did make it better. I now have air bags but have not had the KLR on since installing them. Have had 350DRs, 400 DRZ and 650 DR on it besides my KLR traveling about Texas and Arkansas . No problem so far.

I have used one on the back of my ton Chevy Avalanche & it doesn t make the truck squat in the least. I have Firestone air bags inside the rear coil springs & keep them pumped up to about 5 psi all the time just so they don t slip around inside the spring (manufacturer s recommendation). When I tow a 5000 lb Malibu boat I pump them up to about 15 psi to firm up the rear suspension & raise the rear of the truck a bit. But with the bike on there I don t do a thing. FWIW, I bought a hitch mount carrier off of ebay from the user "motobatteries." The carrier itself is fine, but the ramp that comes with it is pretty flimsy. Trying to get a rolling start to get the KLR up the ramp caused the ramp to flex, bend, and distort to uselessness. I emailed them and sent a picture of the ramp, and they sent me another which promptly did the same thing. I'm using an old school wood ramp now. If you do buy one of these carriers (similar to this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorcycle-Scooter-DirtBike-Carrier-Hauler-Hitch-Mount-Rack-Ramp-Anti-Tilt-ALUM-/140920100130?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20cf7e1522&vxp=mtr ) DO NOT try to get a running start at the ramp, it just makes things go bad. Or do yourself a favor and just ditch the ramp that comes with it and get a nice plank of 2" wood. da Vermonster

John B. Uses one for his DR400, part of the Aluminum Mounting plate broke from all the flexing, I welded up a Heavy duty steel one. From what I seen, I suggest using a suport to take the weight off the ends when Loading, AND use ratchet straps etc., from the corners to the corners of the bed of your truck (etc.) to keep it from "Teeter Tottering" and breaking that area.
