Geoff, I have one and there is a healthy piece of gel inserted. One problem I found is the wimpy piece of foam that covers the gel. Looking back at all the old posts on this seat, there was problems with this top layer of foam crumbling after a short time and so little foam, that it couldn't do much to insulate the gel from getting hot. I also talked with Bogdan and others who had custom seats built with gel inserts. Covering the gel adequately is a big deal. If you buy this seat, you'll understand what I mean by whimpy foam covering the gel insert. -Maybe 1/4" of the cheapest really open cell foam I've seen. It looks like it's ready to crumble even when new. On the seat instructions, Saddleman claims not to remove this layer because it is there to keep the cover tight and prevent wrinkling. On my seat, I built the seat up with 3/4" of very firm and dense closed cell foam - also know for it's insulating properties. To add this much foam and still have the seat cover go on, some of the base foam of the seat has to be removed. I also elongated the pocket for the gel so I could get it down to the level required to add this much foam. Just sitting on the seat with the cover loosely draped before adding a new top layer of foam, the seat didn't feel firm enough for me. It now feels much firmer and I think the gel underneath will help to form to me and cushion my tail bone. I've got a 4 day, 1600 mile tour around Chicago, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan UP and back to metro Detroit planned in two weeks. First big test of the new seat build. I've made several similar trips and I'll see how my backside feels about the new seat when I return. Locally, the seat feels great - but I had no real problems with stocker until I hit about mile 100. One thing for sure; the Saddleman seat cover does look great! I also use a wool pad on top of the seat for long trips. I've just always liked wool seat covers - warm when cold, cool when hot. How do those sheep do it? -CamoGreg> > Says they're on sale right now for $109! > > That sounds like a good deal to me. Anyone ever use one of these? > > Geoff- > www.oldrice.com
