ims fuel tank
I have a hard time believing a gas tank, metal or plastic can explode due to the build up of internal pressure from expanding gasses. The seals (either at the cap or the petcock) would leak before a failure of the tank walls. The OEM tanks have an internal tube that attaches to a hose under the front of the seat. And on my IMS vented cap, there is a check valve that only closes when the fluid pushes it closed, all other times it remains open. Its like a little ball that floats in the liquid. I'm sure the Acerbis has the same arrangement, I have seen photos of a KLR on it's side intentionally to see if the Acerbis cap leaked. it did not.

I used to use one way valves. At some point in the past someone posted, on this very list, that it's not a good idea in the summer. Apparently he left his ride out in the sun and his tank exploded. The sun gets super hot at Colorado altitude so I took mine out. I bet that cap works well but I'd still worry about putting a tank bag on it. I do go down once in a while. If gas spilled it sure would be hard to get the smell out don't ask how I know. Also I bet some vapors would escape into the bag.

I believe the vents are actually under the edges of the cap, someone correct me if I'm wrong. And unless you tip over the vent won't be getting gas on your tank bag. It normally lets air into the tank as the engine uses gas. In fact, there may be a one way check valve so if you tip over it won't allow spillage.

I've put 35k miles or so on said tank. I like it much better if you go down. I hated those goofy shrouds. However are you dependent on tank bags ? I am on a light bike it's important to have as much weight as possible forward. The IMS vents with a rubber
tube from the gas cap dirt bike style. Not good for putting the tank bag on top. I modified the cap so that the vertical tubing out of the cap and the first few inches when it turns horizontal is metal. Now my Wolfman rests happily.

You very well may be right, David. Anyone can post anything. I'm not an expert on what explodes and what doesn't. ( Maybe a woman's temper ? ) I sometimes leave my ride in the desert sun so I did not want to play crash dummy. I took out the one way valve.

I have read that they fit or can be made to fit, but the real decision is whether to protect your radiator with the HT Nerfs or with the IMS tank. I reasoned that $225 for the tank was cheaper than $284 for the nerfs, with the added bonus of up to another gallon and a half capacity. Using the nerf bars with the IMS tank is gilding the lily, or having your cake and having your pie and still eating them both. Of course, with the Nerfs you have a place to mount your bullwhip and your grappling hooks.

Still on the tank question and maybe I missed something in an earlier thread......I think the tank came with "California" instructions that calls for using the supplied "T" and vent tubes. I ordered an Acerbis vented cap for the tank so do I disregard the supplied tubes and tee and simply attach the lines to the petcock as before?

ims fuel tank
Think I know more than I do sometimes, I disregarded the instructions with the tank (re: venting) and just reattached the fuel and vacuum line to the petcock, added fuel and kept my fingers crossed. The bike fired up and ran ok for about a minute then dies. Hard to start again and when it does it runs rough then dies. Is this a venting issue?

Gas can't flow out if air can't get in. The tank needs a vent to air. The
petcock vacuum line only operates the petcock valve (only opens fuel flow
when there is engine vacuum - engine running. To test try running with the
tank cap removed. If it still runs bad, look elsewhere.

Did you flush out your new tank? Most times there is manufacturing debris left inside the tank that can foul your float valve in the carb. Does your bike act like it is too lean or too rich? If it is too rich it is most likely something in the float valve. You ll need to remove your card and float to flush out this valve. If your bike is acting too lean, then there may be a blockage in the fuel petcock not letting enough fuel into the carb. Check your fuel flow from the petcock to see if you have a good flow of fuel.
I have seen all sorts of junk inside new gas tanks and you may need an inline fuel filter if you don t already have one.

All gas caps are vented in one way or the other.
