Cyberegos (thats Cyber-Amigos) I have a question about a part on my 2003 KLR; The Problem: "the guard/heat deflector that covers the muffler (just above where you put in the engine oil) is rusting, so I want to replace it". My questions are: 1. Do I have to go to the dealer for this part, or is there an after market replacement that will fit? A stainless steel one would be great. 2. Because the shield/guard is rusting, any I looking at any problems when I remove the one currently on "la Podesosa"? Does the rust tend to eat into the muffler pipe and make it difficult to install the replacement? Eddie New Orleans P.S. There are no aftermarket ones available that I know of. If you want a stainless one, you can make your own like I did with a ball-peen hammer and a stack of carpet samples. I can NOT get my shield bolts to loosen. Didn't try REAL hard I didn't want to snap them. They are a little loose (FROZEN in place) so the sheild would rattle if I didn't have a hose clamp on it.

Hi Robert, Thanks. The swingarm is the standard '90 Tengai part. I think all KLRs & Tengais from that era ('87-'93) had the "Unitrak" decal. The Tengai has a different rear caliper holder with mounts for the fancy disc guard, which is just a plastic garnish. Mark

A couple of heat cycles and soakings with the Kroil and then use of a hand impact and mid size hammer should loosen or break the bolts. If they break you can then try to drill them out or grind off the nuts and weld new nuts to the header pipe. Here's another pick of my stainless shield. You can either drill & tap, or weld mounting studs into the pipe. I welded stainless M6 screws (heads to pipe) to use as studs, and I use stainless nuts with stainless lockwashers. Mark

Nothing in the aftermarket that I am aware of. I have a nice stainless one that a fellow lister made a few of a while back. I haven't installed it yet; waiting until I put on the new (to me) stock system I picked up a few years ago. Is yours really rusting out or is it just surface rust? I have never seen a stock heat shield rust through. I have been to New Orleans. It is a fun town to visit, but you couldn;t pay me enough to get me to move there.

My shield bolts were likewise rusted in place and VERY hard to remove. The shield also rattled. I got them out with lots of torque and replaced them with stainless ones a bi shorter to stop the rattle. Robert Wichert P.Eng.
