I know there are lots of opinions on here regarding this topic. However, I was doing a search to find different companies that made a full system for the KLR. Hindle makes one. I've not heard much talk about it here. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this company and maybe even a photo of this system. Rick

No Hindle knowledge, but some general points (having tried a Laser Pro-Duro, Jardine, Supertrapp EAR, and Supertrapp IDS2). 1- The stock pipe is nearly indestructible. It will surface rust, start tweeting, and slowly burn off the paint. But it will last the life of the bike, and you can bang it on rocks and trees all day long. 2- The stock exhaust is stealth-vehicle quiet. A real plus for woods riding, and long distance rides where even a moderately louder aftermarket pipe starts to grate on your ears. 3- The stock muffler weighs 13.5 lbs. The stock headpipe weighs maybe 3 lbs, 2 is more likely. Anyone claiming more than a 9lb total weight savings is a liar. A supertrapp IDS2 weighs 4 lbs, for a 9.5 lb weight loss with a HUGE compromise in durability. A Laser Pro-Duro is 5.5lbs with a FAR lower reduction in durability. 4- The KLR is not powerful. There, I said it. But it has enough power to perform suprisingly well in all sorts of environments, on and off road. People with time, money, and a dyno to burn have tried ALL sorts of exhaust setups. Getting more than 3 hp usually involves serious head and carb work, not to mention ruining the very waterproof airbox with all sorts of breathing mods. At the least it requires big rejetting and a loss of fuel economy. Anyone claiming a "6hp gain" from an exhaust is a liar. But, if it looks cool, isn't too loud, and gives a nice rideability, why not? Of course, something equally decadent like an electric vest, or hard luggage, would get you a lot more riding enjoyment. I'm looking for a used stock exhaust. If anybody has replaced theirs with an after-market and your stock one is laying around let me know. Chris Jennings Photographer Durant Daily Democrat

The stock exhaust produces more horsepower above 5,000 rpm than any exhaust I have seen tested. If you need more horsepower below 5,000 rpm you probably need to downshift. Is that a recommendation? beggijonsson wrote: Hi i am looking into getting new exhaust for my new KLR, what exhaust do you guys reccoment Archive Quicksearch at: http://www.angelfire.com/ut/moab/klr650_data_search.html List sponsored by Dual Sport News at: www.dualsportnews.com List FAQ courtesy of Chris Krok at: www.bigcee.com/klr650faq.html Yahoo! I am wanting to upgrade the exhaust on my 06 KLR. The options seem to be Big gun, Supertrap and Durapro. I am looking for advice and what experience people have had with these. Also what other modifications have to be made(rejet, air cleaner etc.) --------------------------------- Yahoo! Mail Bring photos to life! New PhotoMail makes sharing a breeze. There's been alot written in here on aftermarket exhaust. Spending some time with the quicksearch of this sight should give you alot of info - probably more than you really wanted to know. I once thought I would like a beefer sound and some extra ponies from the KLR. My concensus on aftermarket exhaust is to leave it stock. Mostly what I've read is a large decrease in gas mileage, and yes - carb mods will be required. It can be done for a very modest increase in HP - mostly what I think you get is a louder different sound, lots of carb tinkering to get a compromise, and a your wallet $300+ lighter - that doesn't count the extra gas money. I've known more riders that went back to the stock exhaust after the aftermarket one was toast than have continued to be impressed by them. don't forget about having to occasionally repack the new exhaust too. But it has been done with some modest performance gains and a gives a new sound. IMHO. Greg A9 Michigan

I went back to stock after having a Big Gun mainly because Haley guys were starting to get friendly and woods riders were threatening to run me off into the woods. Seriously, the stock exhaust is super stout and you never have to repack it plus it has a spark arrestor (which is a good thing if your area has a high fire danger as mine does at the moment. I have got used to listening to the air intake howl instead of the pipe. Er...... the pipe with tweety sounds like a 1963 VW with a blown head gasket. Not a manly sound but it runs off Harley guys. Yes there is probably more than a person can read in the arkives on exhausts. My trip was an ISD Trap < Too loud and not enuff power increase to warrent the noise Next was a Competition type that I got off ebay and it was about the same as the Trapp, Loud. When back to the old standard with 2 1/2" holes drilled in it at 2 and 4 oclock. Not much louder than stock and let the revs run a bit free from the plain stock. All I have done to the carb is drill the brass plug and set the Idle mixture screw at about 2.5 turns. Lots of better things to spend a few hundred bucks on to improve your KLR than exhaust.
