it's about 185mm center to center, thats a little more than 7-1/4 (7- 9/32). Kawasaki is all over the place with their tollerances.

I can measure my forks for the hole, but getting an accurate center to center dimension on the folks is fairly critical. > > Thanks in advance > > Brian Sawyer > Lexington, KY > '03 KLR650 > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

IRT to the discussion on fork braces, are all fork braces created (generally) equal, and how does one know a good one from a "better" one....maaatin ps: IYHO, is there one or two to "stay away from" (8~0 RE: HT ForkbraceThey make a big difference on the street. The front forks are pretty long and spindly. The fork brace firms them up roughly midway between the axle and the lower triple clamp. I really noticed it, especiallywhen leaned over hard on cracked/uneven asphalt. Less benefit if you ride mostly dirt. But I cosider it an excellentinvestment on both my KLRs. Well, I can say my Superbrace (2 pieces, not three) do just fine. The ones that use bolts to hold a connector plate between them, like on ebay, well, I would prefer not having bolts - 2 casting shells that mate makes more sense to me. Just my 2 cents... They aren't all created equal. On the mythical "on tolerance" front end, just about any fork brace would work well. On the KLR, it's a crapshoot as to whether a particular brace will help you or hinder because you don't know if it will fit exactly. This is why I liked the K-9 brace that Happy-trails sells, you can fit it up exactly to your particular front end. -- Devon Brooklyn, NY A15-Z '01 KLR650 '81 SR500 cafe racer "The truth's not too popular these days....." I broke a Telefix brace pretty quickly offroad (probably when I dropped the bike)... It's fairly sleek and probably one of the lightest, but only good for the street. Krokko -- Dr. J. Christopher Krok John Lucas Adaptive Wind Tunnel Caltech MS 205-45, Pasadena, CA 91125

Regardless of what kind of spring you have in your forks, cause they do something totally different, a fork brace will help keep the 2 fork tubes in line with each other much better while twisting the bars to countersteer into a turn. The harder, faster, and more abrubtly that you do that, the longer the lag time will be from when you iniate the turn till the bike actually turns without the brace on. When I put a brace on I had to readjust my turn entry point because the difference was so great while at speed in the twisties. There is also some benefits while off road too, but that is contraversial. All I really care about is the fast on road improvement of the brace. Of course putting one on also adds sprung weight to the front end too, which is not a good thing, so I got the lightest brace that I could find. has anyone tried the dual-star fork brace? it's nice looking. is it as good as the sturdier looking versions? i have found with other bikes a substantial improvement with a fork brace. not riding on off road tires on the street ever, i notices the extra flexing not sure if it's the forks-bike-tires-all of above. nothing over dramatic just being observant and sensitive to all sounds and feelings about the bike (2006 with 3000 miles on original tires stainture exhaust ,progressive shock((i believe to lower it)) but no other modifications to carbs or any maintenance or performance enhancements.

But before buying, I wanted to know if anyone had issues with the heat from the pipe melting the bags(I have stock exhaust). Also, does anyone have picture of the bags mounted on a KLR? Dual Star sells the Scott Summers brace, which is as good a brace as you will find. Installation can be trickier than some of the others, but it is sturdy and has been used by racers and enduro riders for years. I have devised a mod which makes installation a little easier, and which facilitates the use of stock fork gaiters (the alternative is protective blades and SealSavers). If you get the brace, you can contact me for details, or look it up on KLR650.net. I don't particularly endorse this brace over the others; I just happened to get mine used at a good price, and a DR650 I bought also had one installed, so I have some experience with it.

Call Fred @ Arrowhead Motorsports, he'll fix you up with one. I have one. What I like about it is that it's adjustable. Other fork braces assume all forks are the same. Note that a fork brace is no panacea. I've ridden my bike with and without one and frankly can't really tell a difference, other than maybe it being a tiny bit quicker to turn into a corner. _E

I also have the K9 fork brace. From my experience, it seems to keep the bike a little more stable on particularly rough turns. It holds a line better in real bumpy curves. l had previous bikes that would get pretty jumpy under the same circumstances without the fork brace. Don "E.L. Green" wrote:
