For a number of years now, I've been using a gizmo called Z-Chain Oiler. It's a plastic brush you wrap around the chain and you can squirt lube into. I use it every time I lube the chain; keep it in a container zip tied to the bike. Can be a bit messy but not too bad. $12 (?) at moto stores. chain lube
The method I use is simple, I lift the bike's rear wheel by using
two ratcheting tiedown straps hooked to a rafter in the garage, Start
the bike and put it in first and let the rear wheel spin. As it spins
I spray desiel fuel, or karoseen from a pump up gardeb sprayer on the
chain as it rotates. I have a 4'x 14" sheet of scrap plywood I put
down under the bike to catch all the crud.
Sometimes I put news papers on the plywood to help with the clean up.

Newspaper works great for the cleaning debree coming off the chain. I clean
my chain w/ a chain cleaner, much like wd-40, and fling it dry by running
the bike at about 40mph on the speedo. It comes off fast at that speed - I
then apply a chain oil from Motorex - Dirt Chain lube 622 series
Example -

oh, the baby can is great for use while riding - refills from the mother
bottle with ease, much like a butane3 lighter from the source can of butane.
Geez, this is better than an oil thread for the motor. :-0

I'm currently still trying out the advice that I got from 2 guys that have both been riding bikes for a damn long time. The advice? Use nothing, it doesn't do your O/X ring chain any good. We shall see. To clarify, I AM cleaning off the chain with WD-40 after I ride in the dirt, but not usually till I get home, and sometimes that is hundreds of mile away. I will also clean it once in a while if it just gets really dirty looking, but so far, that has only been once. I am using an awesome DID X-ring chain to begin with, and the high tensile strength certainly helps. I keep it cleaned, (important) adjusted properly, (VERY important) and I started out with this chain connected to brand new, sturdy, steel sprockets too. I currently have 8000 miles on the chain and sprockets, and those are hard miles. I am not a delicate rider by any means. I had to adjust it twice so far. The first adjustment was at about 5000 miles and it only needed 1/4 of a turn on the adjusters, and the second time was at about 7000 miles and again needed only 1/4 turn. No mess, no oil fling, no scrubbing super sticky lube off the bike, no hassle. I am loving it. I am also keeping a close eye on my clean rims for the detection of lube flinging out from behind the rings. So far, I have seen none. MrMoose A8 (Barbie and Ken special)> OK. chain lube
Well Folks, Having read all of the posts on the above subject for a few
days, I came up with an idea on the subject that
might be worth thinking about.
When I am on long trips, (Edmonton to Tijuana and back, for example) I
lube my chain with one of the pressurized cans of grease every day at
noon. This oiling has to last 24 hours and so it had better be pretty
sticky stuff. If a person was using an oiler that constantly oils the
chain, perhaps a thinner substance like WD40 would be better since it
only has to last a short time until another drop is delivered, and not
being so sticky there would be less dirt stuck to the chain and
sprockets and rims and spokes and anything else that gets in the way.
Just a thought.

I'm willing to bet big money that your not cleaning all of that sticky goop off of your chain before reapplying new stuff while your on the road. If you are, you are doing a lot of work that I don't have to do, and wouldn't do. If your spraying your chain every 24 hours on the road, WD-40 is just the ticket.> This oiling has to last 24 hours and so it had better be pretty > sticky stuff.
WD-40 is too thin for that.> If a person was using an oiler that constantly oils the > chain, perhaps a thinner substance like WD40 would be better

way. If you use an oiler, you have to use a thick, and at least semi sticky oil product. Hence you will have a mess. Enter WD-40. MrMoose A8 (Barbie and Ken special)> being so sticky there would be less dirt stuck to the chain and > sprockets and rims and spokes and anything else that gets in the

I originally used it on firearms to lube and protect from corrosion, and then it dawned on me that that's exactly what I want my chain lube to do as well. Works great. Coming from the street side of motorcycling, I was previously using chain wax. Didn't take much dirt riding to realize that wasn't the way to go, and now I don't use chain wax on my street bikes either. Randy> > > Any favorites re chain lube? What do you guys use?
