Its a "DRAG" man..... O-ring chains that seal in lub, seal out dirt also cause drag since these little O-rings must maintain contact with the mating surface to seal anything. Dooden A15 Green Ape (not much O-ring left on mine...)> you explain? > Dennis A 18 the big red 1

I think a few cans of WalMarts finest WD-40 imatation does just fine and at less than a buck a can do not mind spraying alot at the chain to flush the yuckies off. chain lube
Hi folks,
Could anyone suggest a good chain lube. I have read that WD40 works
OK. I`m not sure what I should use.
Thanks

It's not the lube it's the frequency of use, and chain
cleaning.
I use whatever good lube is available at the local
dealer.
I get the chain warm (riding or on stand). I then
spray it good with WD 40, then wipe that off. Then I
apply the lube to the inside of the chain. I have
8000++ miles on my A-18 and chain and sprocket look
new.

Anything is OK as long as you avoid the sticky crap that resembles chainsaw bar & chain oil in a spray can. I like lubing with used motor oil when I'm riding locally 'cause it's free and effective, but a bit messy. When on the road, my lube de jour is either PB Blaster Garage Door Lube, which while very light (like WD40) is supposedly an EP lube. The best motorcycle-specific lube that I've found is Castrol moto chain lube, which comes in a large spray can for only $3.49 CAD at Canadian Tire. It's a little more viscous than the WD40 type sprays, but it's not tacky at all. The other moto-specific lubes are sticky and attract abrasive grit which is worse than not lubing at all. Chain wax sucks unless you constantly reapply it and then it leaves a clump of 'melted crayons' and dirt inside the from sprocket cover. Chain wax also makes my chain squeak when it gets wet. I'm learning like you, and the Prior owner was using a yamaha spray on
chain wax mainly to keep it clean looking I think. In my exhaustive
internet searches, I ran across someinfo, from Eldon I think, that
says if you use the KLR manual recommended 90 wt hypoid gear oil, you
will get a lot more mileage from the chain. I have on hand a lot of
outboard lower unit oil, which I know is used as a replacement for the
old 90 wt oil in my old '58 outboard, so I am using that on my chain.
You can find the outboard oil anywhere.

I get the same results with just WD-40. Also I find that it's thin enough so you don't have to apply it to a warm chain. Bogdan> > I get the chain warm (riding or on stand). I was using 90wt gear oil, because I have a bunch of
it and that is what is recommended, but it is so messy
with sticky oil being deposited everywhere, I am
switching to a waxy chain lube recommended by my shop.

chain lube
Anyone have any suggestions for techniques to clean the chain? I'm using
kerosene according the owner's manual recommendation and get the chain
sort of clean with a fingernail scrubber, but its not perfect and its
very messy. I'm not sure what would be the most effective/easiest way to
clean the chain without taking it off the bike or damaging the O-rings.
I've been driving a shaft drive bike for the last 22 years and haven't
had to worry about chains for a long time.
