blue ridge parkway ride report (1 of several parts)

Hi group, I had my 2004 KLR out for a ride today, got some mud on it and once back at home, I hosed down the bike. I got some of the spray on the dashboard area. I don't think I sprayed the carb, but I may have. When I went to start it , it cranked for a while, backfired once and then started. The moment I touched the throttle , it died. I went through this routine a few times and gave up trying to start it. Looking for some suggestions on what may be wrong and how to correct it. Thanks in advance for any help. Jay

When you say you went through the routine a couple times, does that mean it will start every time but dies every time when you touch the throttle, or did it only start the first time and now only cranks? If it starts, will it idle indefinitely if you leave the throttle alone, or does it die... and if it dies, after how long? How aggressively did you hose it? -Luke --- cedarpondroad wrote:

I had a dead/shorted battery in one of my other bikes, and it did _exactly_ that. Ignition on, lights come on. Turn to start, lights die and nothing. Less than one minute later, turn key back on, lights come on. Repeat. Check for bad connections first, but if the battery is a few years old, that could be it. Krokko -- J. I started the bike this morning getting ready for work. After warming it up for a bit I jumped on her and drove off. I got about 100ft from my driveway until I reached a stop sign. I stopped then as I preceeded to go I let out the clutch a little too fast and she stalled. When I tried to start her again I got absolutely nothing no grinding no screetching not a peep. Any clues on where to start? RTR

Easiest thing first: Is your emergency stop button engaged? Next, I'd go with the safety switches: clutch and side stand. If the bike "thinks" it's in gear and the clutch is out, it won't turn over. robert wrote:

Thanks for all the help and advice and for those of you suggesting the battery cables etc, well it was the battery. I would have never suspected it running so well then all of a sudden nothing. Apparently it had almost a full charge on the battery but only had 2 amps registering. Not exactly sure what that means but the guy at the dealership said this just won't do. A new battery later and she runs like a champonce again. Robert

Years back on my '92 KLR I was riding a levee down here in S. Louisiana and stopped to take a break. Bike running fine and had just went about 125 miles since last gas stop / break. Went to restart after a break and nothing. Checked Batt connections, solenoid connections and everything else I could think of. Then got the idea to short out the batt and see if it had life. Nothing. Not even a spark. Good thing I was able to push start it and run the next 100 miles back home. Replaced it with a batt from Wal Mart which stayed in there till I sold the bike a year later.
