Yesterday I was met an police cruiser with a radar unit in the window and even though I was doing about 125 kph in a 80 kph zone he did not stop me to write out a speeding ticket. While I was relieved about not getting a ticket I started thinking about what kind of reading do those radar units get from a KLR650 or from any bike for that matter. A small frontal area and lots of plastic might not let them get a good reading on bikes. Anybody know anything about how this works? A stealthy bike would be great. Richard Chapleau, Ontario A15

I don't know what "kind" of reading they get...but they've gotten me before. 92mph in a 55... dat brooklyn bum

My VFR is pretty "Stealthy" and Moab has one of those stationary radar devices that tells you your speed. (Like that is going to make me slow down) I usually speed up to make it come on. If you ride at a steady speed it wouldn't come on. I would see it come on with another vehicle and when my VFR would ride by it wouldn't pick me up. Police radar reads off KLR650s just fine (I know this for a fact). They'll read a baseball, so a motorcycle is no problem. The only situation is when there's a LOT of large vehicle traffic, in that case the radar usually reads from the largest target. But the police also use laser as well, which is pinpoint. You got lucky, the policeman wasn't paying attention, or didn't care, or was eating his lunch, or filling out paperwork from another ticket he wrote earlier. Devon A15 kelpo2001 wrote:

Two tickets. Second one outside of Douglas AZ. middle of the desert but him and reduced speed sign just over the crest of the hill. 69mph in 45mph= 288.00US Officer "macho" Camacho was his name. Welcome back to the states present for me. Had crossed the border an hour or so before after 10wks in Mexico.

Radar has a wide coverage area that makes it hard for an officer to pick a bike out of a lot of traffic. Laser is a point and shoot method. Maybe the copper is a rider himself and gives bikes a little more room for error.

Richard, I do most of my riding in Ontario since I am only a few miles from the border on the St. Clair River. You have better roads and less cars on them. I was heading over to Port Stanley a while back on my Triumph. I passed an OPP parked on the shoulder while I was doing about 100 mph. All he did was blink his lights. Either he figured he had no chance of catching me, or he was seeing if I would slow down a bit before I got to the next town, where I'm sure he had already radioed the local police. I would never get that sort of break over here in Michigan. BTW ... How's the fishing up in Cree Lake? We did a fly-in several years ago and had a great time. We have also spent time fishing not too far away in Folyet. Hope to get back up there in the not too distant future. My riding buddy is a local cop and uses a laser gun to catch speeders. He says you actually have to point it at the target and 'paint' it to get a reading. A speeding KLR isn't a very big target and makes it difficult for them to get a good reading. He told me that if you come over a hill and see a cop with a laser gun to start moving around in the lane - while decreasing speed of course - and this will make it difficult for them to get a decent sighting on you. I haven't come up against a laser unit in my travels so I don't know if this really works or not - makes sense though. I usually travel about 5 mpg over the speed limit and I always get left alone. Cops seeing a big dirt bike tend to not pay it to much attention - make that a CBR600 and watch what happens. Also, I use my GPS for a speedometer rather then the Speedo on the KLR - my GPS says the KLR speedo is off by 8 mph. So, if you are going by the KLR speedo you will probably be pretty safe - doing 80 mph in a 70 zone means you are only actually doing 72 mph - this is with my speedo and GPS - others may vary. By the way - my cop buddies new R1150GS BMW was about 9 mph high - he was pretty 'pissed' at being that far off. Al Maurine A-15
