G'day all, Just curious if many people have fitted crash bars to their KLR's. If so I'd be interested in any pictures for ideas on contruction & mounting points. I've just added early details of my Desert Ride mid 2002 on my web site, just in case any of you guys happen to be in Australia with your KLR's at the time. Anyone ever noticed the crash bars shown on the military KLR's? I'd like to put some type of bars on my new '04 , but I'm just not sure if I like the look of the PD nerf bars. Do you guys know if the military style bars are available, or if there is anything else on the market for the KLR. Thanks.

Hi, I made one of those 3" PVC tool holders that mount to my skid plate w/ 4 ss hose clamps (solid as a rock). Gary, With the hose clamps, I could shift the tool tube with my feet. I have two pieces of angle iron bolted to the engine mount. I have two 3/16" aluminum strips (1" x 16") bolted to the angle iron. I drilled holes in the tool tube so I could bolt it to the aluminum strips. I left the hose clamps on as insurance. This is very solid, and has been tested (ouch) a number of times. Bill

I used 3-1/2" diesel truck muffler clamps on mine. Got them at Summit Racing. Drilled a couple of holes in the bash plate and thru-bolted the clamps. Since the OD of 3" pipe is 3-1/2" it fits well. Lee

Hey all. I'm looking to safeguard my bike against the parking lot tipovers that everyone is so concerned about My riding is 98% street (mostly urban commuting) but I do some moderate off-roading when the rain stops. I just ordered my Tusk handguards--thanks for the recommendations. I know that the main area to protect is the radiator and fan on the left side. But why is there so much less concern about the right side? Wouldn't it suck if the reservoir got bashed? In other words, can/should I get the Dual Star Radguard at $58 (which looks pretty stout) rather than, say, the Happy Trails combo guard at $86 (which looks a bit thinner)? You could easily ride home. You could rig up a temporary reservoir with a soda bottle and zip ties. Also, there is a steel bar behind the reservior that some of the electrics mount to, so another bar is sort of redundant. I find it convenient to have so I have someplace to zip tie my shroud.

The Dualstar guard is much stronger. The Happy-trails will allow the radiator to bend but seems to prevent it springing a leak. Either one should do for your use, but I like the Dual Star bar. Devon

I'd go with the DS radguard if you are doing any amount of offroad riding. It's much beefier than the HT product. The PO of my bike installed the HT guards, they cracked on the first tip over.
