Wow, I just spent a day looking for batteries!
Good Timing!
I can save you a lot of time on Google!
I wanted a sealed one after spending a lot of time
trying to get the water level correct in my Ebay Red A18.
Yes, 6mo old and the water was below level on some cells!
The cell holes are so small, you have to get an eye dropper.
The water "Sticks" in the hole due to surface tension and the
small diameter holes. I was afraid to put them to the max, but
got them to the middle of of limits. I charged it over night
on a small charger until the float LED came on.
The best Battery I found was the YUASA YTX14AHL-BS.
Some vendors tried to substitute, but I would get this exact one.
210 Cold Cranking amps and a known Manufacturer.
Made in USA! Sealed batteries can ship ready to go too!
You don't have to go to the auto parts store and buy acid.
Now I can take the drain tube off too!
Since it is heavy to ship, I really like the FREE SHIPPING at
Motorcyclebatteriesusa.com
Their Price was good too, $59.75
A cheap replacement costs about $32, plus ACID.
I just wonder what to do with my old one? It is less than a year old.

Some years back I was pointed to Westco as an alternate 'premium' Qual. Have used them since then and have nothing but praise for their worthiness. My bikes, although CA located, live outdoors all the time, under cover, but exposed to the temp variants, from freezing nites to well over 100+ deg running daytime temps. The westcos just seem to be bulletproof and worth the extra 5-10 bucks. The rec comes from my use in my other bikes and from some really high-mileage guyz who rarely are seen off the bike. Haven't had the need to get one for the KLR, since the offbrand that's in there, since my acquisition, seems to be quite adequate at this time. But when the time comes... Just another option http://www.westcobattery.com/battery_page.php?bid=14&vid=1&mid=161 js

Bought a Deka glass mat sealed battery from Happy
Trails.
Same exact size as stock - slides right in and
hooks up - no mods.
Great product. Check out HT site or call for
pricing.
Highly recommended.

====I have no knowledge of past KLR battery reformations and only monitor the list for waiting for a black, camo, military green or I find another environmentally pleasant color, or until I give in to civilized colors;) However, the battery question interests me, as that has been a nemesis over the years, being dropped through the decades in more than one unknown location with what I thought was a new/fresh battery. Battery science/improvement is a revolution to me! I still use a 'tender' 100% of the time and now can find and run only sealed, AGM batteries for all of my cycles. The Vmax groups and others have really settled in on such batteries as Hawker's Odyssey PC680 for the Max. The 680 has been very successful in the Max withstanding severe heat from the headers, a lot of vibration/movement, holding charge many, many times over liquid/acid, etc. I was wondering if there was a similar one that fit the KLR, http://www.batterymart.com/p-ODY-PC545.html and found the PC545. I would be interested if anyone has run the 545 in the KLR and the results. Very reasonable price for such a good battery IMO. It mounts on its side, and I had to extend one of the secondary cables, but that's certainly no biggie. I think quite a few on this list use one. Hey,
Do you think the pc545mj(metal jacket) would be better vs the pc545?

Barry: I got a Odyssey PC545MJ battery for my KLR650 in Sept. '04.
It hasn't been a long time, but so far no problems. No water or any
thing to worry about. Cranks the bike up even after setting a long
time. There supposed to be very tough & reliable. I mounted it on
its side w/the termanals to the left. Did it a little different than
others, I had the positive termanal on top & to the rear & the
negative terminal on bottom rear. No modification needed to the
positive battery cable, but had to relocate where the ground cable
was bolted to the engine so it would reach the neg. terminal. This
was a bit of a problem because Kawasaki had the end bolted to one of
the starter attaching bolts. The problem with that was that you
would have to remove the exhaust pipe to get it un bolted (stupid
Kawasaki). I wasn't about to do that, so I just cut the cable off as
close to the end as possible & soldered on a new heavy duty
connector. You can't use the stock Kawi battery side cover because
there isn't enough room at the top, so made my own side cover using a
piece of thick mud flap rubber & a 1X 1/8 inch aluminium strap. I
think if the Odyessey battery holds up as there supposed to it is the
best way to go. Got mine from Cell Energy Inc. in N. Highlands, CA 1-
800-321-0714 for $68.73 +tax. Pete Chester A16
