I'm a big fan of ear plugs. If you ever ride with me and want to try some, just ask as I usually have a pocket full. I take the time to insert them properly, rolling them flat and inserting into the ear while reaching around my head with the off hand to pull my ear back to straighten the ear canal to allow the plug to fit in. Sometimes it takes more than one try to get it right. Full disclosure - I have significant hearing loss and wear hearing aids to hear most but not all of what other folks take for granted. I also have a set of molded in-ear speaker which allow me to listen to music at conversational volumes while on the bike. Ear plugs and Ipods and the speakers are mounted in helmets, part of the communication system. The music is just background music not overriding any other noises. My wife rides the same way. We're leaving Mexico City tomorrow morn heading north somewhere. Once we get out of the city and on the open roads, the ipods will be turned on.

I use Etymotic ER 20 ear plugs when I ride. I've tried riding with music on long rides but have found that it doesn't work for me. I like the Etymotics because they don't completely seal the ear so I don't get the low frequency booming that I get with other ear plugs and ear muffs. My hearing falls off rapidly above 4,000 hertz so I use hearing protection when riding and when mowing with my lawn tractor. Music in the car but not on the bike. Alan Henderson A13 Iowa

My daily commute on superslab has me normally listening to radio. Visiting England and Europe this summer so I'm listening to French lessons on my ride home. I notice that it traffic ahead looks dicey, I don't think/repeat the lesson until things return to normal. My tiny brain can be distracted. However, when I rode my Street Triple home from Oregon to Phoenix, I HAD to listen to music to stay alert. Nothing like Seether blasting to keep you awake!
