klr 650 stolen then found- need advice

Post by RobertWichert » Sun Nov 13, 2011 10:49 am

OK, I think that the muffler mounts are bent in a little bit, maybe. If you just lever the muffler away from the tire a little bit, that may take care of the whole thing. Those two upper mounts are what holds it and I can't get a finger between my TKC 80 rear tire and the muffler. It's a tight fit. If yours is touching, it would be just a 1/2" of movement at the bottom to get it far enough away. I sent a picture of my muffler, side view. Robert Wichert P.Eng. Perhaps the rear muffler mounting tab is bent a little, giving it a little twist ? My 5.10 Kenda K270 rubs like Jud's Dunlop 606. Pics not all loading for me, but is rear wheel adjusted straight ? Dooden A15 Green Ape

Update: I got new fuses from Mr. Fred, got a new ignition, ignition kill is in on position, try to start the bike, it cranks but doesn't start. Tank is full of gas. I disconnected the fuel line from the petcock and the gas does not flow. Is that normal? I banged on the carb a bit, thinking the float might be stuck. Still nothing. What are my next steps? Check the plugs? -David Z mobile: 646.267.1109 -please download our free single www.thevanguardband.com

<><><><><><> <><><><><><> David, It's normal to disconnect the fuel line and have nothing come out of the petcock when the engine isn't running. The KLR petcock has a vacuum "feature" that stops fuel flow when the engine isn't running. You can test it's operation by disconnecting the vacuum line from the carb and the fuel line from the petcock. Turn the petcock to the on position and suck on the vacuum line. Fuel should come out the fuel line. You can try the reserve position too if you want to verify it's working. Might be worth opening the drain screw on the bottom of the carb and seeing if there is fuel in the float bowl. The screw is on the bottom right side of the carb. You don't have to open it much to let fuel run out the drain. A small catch basin under the drain will keep fuel off the engine if that's important to you. I think an easy way to check for spark is to take a second sparkplug and plug the sparkplug wire on it. Make sure the body (metal threaded end) is grounded to the engine. Then crank the engine like you were going to start the bike and watch the electrode for a spark. If you don't see what looks like a healthy spark that could be the no start issue. I know my ideas are rarely correct, but I would be checking the "safety" switches on the kickstand especially and on the clutch/neutral. Only try to start it in neutral. Bypass the kickstand safety switch. Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

Well the guy did steal my center stand and the safety switch plastic cover was taken as well so i will look into that for sure. I did try to start the bike while it was in neutral but it was standing on the side stand. Could that really be IT? Cant wait to get home and get it off the sidestand. Happy Thanksgiving to All!!! <><><><><><> <><><><><><> David, The side stand has nothing to do with starting the engine if the bike is in neutral. The side stand only comes into play when the bike is in gear, the clutch is out and the side stand is down. Well, that's the only time if everything is working properly. : ) Do you have fuel in the float bowl and spark at the sparkplug? Answer those questions and you'll be well on your way to figuring what to do next. klr 650 stolen then found- need advice

Post by david zawadzki » Mon Mar 05, 2012 11:28 am

Hello Everybody, So the weather has been pretty good on the east coast and i decided to pull my baby out. I finally removed the spark plug and its getting no spark. Since my bike was stolen and found and i believe someone tried to hot wire it is it possible that the cdi unit is blown and thats the reason its not getting a spark? Also i replaced the fuses with Freds Kit but found that im missing one fuse. Is this the fuse for the headlights? It has a little (circlr shaped) connection that goes to the pos and neg battery terminal. My signals and brakelight are currently working. The headlight is not. About the only way to check your cdi is to swap it out with a known good one to see if you have spark. Did you change out the fuse for your cooling fan? The one under the right shroud by your coolant reservoir tank.
