klr 650 stolen then found- need advice
Or maybe broke the rear sub-frame under the seat causing it to sag?

Dave:
There are two "links" or sometimes called "dog bones", because of their
shape, that can be seen under the bike where they connect near the end of
the shock absorber and the swing arm. He might have changed them but not
many people have lowering links sitting around for when they steal that KLR.
Does the shock absorber look OK: not bent, wet from an oil leak, or very
little of the shiny metal shaft sticking out the bottom (seems like it is
pushed all the way in the shock body), can you bounce on the bike and it
makes a thump or does it feel normal? To me, if the links weren't switched
out, the shock absorber would be the next place to evaluate.

Right.. The problem is that the insurance company won't let me see the bike
before I decide what I want to do.
From what i remember the shock looked like it was sitting really low and
when i sat on the bike there was no bounce. It was sitting flat, as if i was
sitting on a chair. I had the lowering rings in already on before and i
think they were still there. I pushed the bike about 20feet but that was
about all that i was allowed to do. Maybe the subframe is broken? Will a
little weld job be strong enough?
Im leaning more towards taking the bike, seeing whats up and taking it from
there. Anybody got an extra ignition switch they want to sell?
Whats the worst case scenario? Cracked frame and a busted shock? 200$ fix?
Thanks,
-David

Without skipping ahead and reading the other answers, my quick response is, worst case the bike is too trashed for anything but parts. You should easily realize more than $400 by parting it out.

A good weld should hold. I broke the top triple clamp on my Hodaka years ago (in an unintentional endo) and had it Heli arc welded. I rode it like I stole it for another couple of years. A spectacular endo.

klr 650 stolen then found- need advice
Two issues;
First, to get to look at the bike (which someone has told you you cannot do) don't give up. Ask to talk to a manager. Tell him you were initially told that you could not see the bike to inspect to see whether you want it or not. Assure him that you trust he can help you work this out. No one in their right mind is interested in buying a "pig in a poke."
Second, instead of buying a new ignition, try a good lock smith. He should be able to make you a key or re-key the lock. Or, perhaps the dealer can use the numbers on the switch to reproduce the key.
Good luck.

This is a little confusing to me. If you mean that the tire almost touches the rear fender, your shock may be broken. I broke the spring collar on my rear shock once and it made the KLR look like chopper, the back end low and the long forks raked out. No such thing as "lowering rings", the KLR uses links, but if they were removed, then yes, I think the whole back end would drop down. Good luck, Paul Streeter [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]>bike apart? What else could have caused this?

Very common, not a big deal at all. Here is a super-anal thread to read. http://advwisdom.hogranch.com/Wisdom/KLR650%20Subframe%20drill%20thru%20step%20by%20step%20walkthru.html As far as the rest of the bike, unless the dummy drained it of oil and then ringed it out, I reckon it'll be just fine. Follow up to my "Stolen and then found" earlier post...
The wait is over and i got the bike back. Just ordered the new ignition off
feabay and wonder if it will start.
The bike is looks like it got into a small fight and has a few cuts and
bruises. Overall im happy with the condition.
There is one problem though...
1.The muffler is touching the wheel and i dont know why. I try to lift the
muffler but it wont go anywhere.

2. The shock seems to be sticking out too much. i dont remember how it was
before. maybe this is the cause of the problem?

the shock itself looks ok

What do i do from here?
When i sit on the bike, it feels like the shock has some bounce. Its not
totally flat as if i was sitting on a piece of wood.
Should i adjust the shock? Turning clockwise only right?
Thanks for all your help,
David
