pilot screw

There's no consensus because changes in air filters or exhaust make it all work differently. With a stock exhaust and a stock air filter, anything from 1 1/4 to 2 turns is perfectly driveable and fixes the lean surging. Jake makes a tool for adjusting the mixture screw with the carb in place. I've been using it a lot as I try to sort out the stock carb I recently refit to the bike. Devon Jim wrote:

Recently I've adjusted mine using Jake's Goldylocks "sweet spot" method. You set the screw out 2 turns. With the engine warm you turn the screw in till the engine RPM decreases ( too lean ); note how many turns that took. Then you turn the screw out till the RPM decreases ( too rich ); note how many turns that took. The sweet spot is between those two points ( just right ).

Correct. As Z mentioned it's way easier if you have one of the two adjustment aids. Note if you get the HD hand adjustable screw as I did, it doesn't seat completely thus you start richer than with the stock screw. I think my sweet spot -at 6,000 ft- was 1 turn out. Bogdan
