Has anybody tried to sort out a quick release for the side panels or seat? Seems to me it would be convienient to have them be released more quickly. Maybe even without tools. Looks like the seat could easily be converted to quick release pins like the push button t-pins used on military aircraft. Not sure how to do the side panels though

I Drilled a 1/2 inch hole in the side panels to access the seat bolts to not have to remove them to take off the seat. In a message dated 12/1/2011 9:04:29 A.M. Some other folks drill holes in the side panels so they can access the seat mount bolts with a socket and extension. I just remove the side panels as it only takes about a minute and gives access to lots of hidden bike parts that are worthy of inspection every now and then. The big question, why do you need quick access so often? Fuses? Some move the fuses for easyer access, like behind the R. front panel, then hinge it. I know on trips when a fuse blows and the bike is LOADED with camping etc. gear you have to unload the bike just to take the seat off. So My fuses are going up front.

I suppose you "could" drill holes and then use ball-lock fasteners. Seems like a lot of work to save not much effort though. Like, how much time did I spend typing this and thinking about it? I have a 2008 with a pair of Aluminum boxes mounted. There is no easy access to the little 8mm bolts in the rear of the panels and then I need to snake the panels out from between the bike and the box mounts. It takes a little longer to get it off and getting the rear side panel bolts back in is a long fiddly process. That is why I am interested in replacing the bolts with something easier. The seat bolts are not a big deal but I figured while considering rapid access..... If I break something during a rally I want the bike apart as fast as possible so I can fix it and get back on the trail. We had the tanks off of two KLRs in the woods during the Roaming Rally and I have seen at least one tank off in the Pine Barrens. The rallies are generally not time based events but there is an edge of competition always. More so the first one to reach the camp at the end of any day gets his pick of camp sites. Even the first beer!. Speed is of the essence!!!! So far I have heard trying to drill the holes and replace with quick release and an idea involving Velcro between the frame and seat, that sounds quick and easy but I don't think it will work on the side panels. The idea of drilling a hole for access to the seat bolts has the same limitation.
