Finally, I will be able match the the powerplant with
decals that are already on my Tengai.
Actually this is a very cool announcement. I would
love to ride through this current fuel crisis with a
100MPG vehicle.
===============================
I've been out of town for a while and not keeping up
with the list, so
this may be old news. If so, I apologize.
An Alert FAQ Reader forwarded an e-mail he received
from F1 Engineering, in which they indicate that they
will be making 100 diesel KLRs available to the
public, as well as crate engines. They expect the
bikes to run 20% over MSRP. A "substantial" deposit
will be required, which will be placed in escrow and
returned in the event that there is a problem with
release.
Keep an eye on the F1 website for info.

You rat! That's the same e-mail I was forwarded, but I didn't post the whole thing. In the interest of one-upsmanship, I e-mailed Roger Flynn last night to ask if I could post that info to the FAQ, and his response is below. In short, dont' get too excited about the diesel bikes just yet, the first 100 are going to be collectors' items. I presume that regular civilian production would begin after that. Neener, neener! And since when is 16 G's 20% over the cost of a KLR? Gotta wonder who's going to collect an oil-burning KLR. Also gotta wonder what the eBay price will be in April. __Arden> production would begin after that. > > Krokko

They didn't say 20% over the cost of a KLR. They said 20% over MSRP. You are assuming Kawasaki is the manufacturer which would put it at $6238.80 but the manufacturer is HDT so MSRP must be around $12800.00. Walt> Neener, neener! I posted the PDF of the diesel KLR to the files section. Is it my
eyeballs, or does that rear sprocket look suspiciously large? No
wonder it's stable at 3mph.
Any Utah Listers out there that want to go to the flats in September
and check out the oil-burner?

It looks like my JT 47 tooth rear sprocket. Walt> I posted the PDF of the diesel KLR to the files section. Is it my > eyeballs, or does that rear sprocket look suspiciously large? No > wonder it's stable at 3mph. > > __Arden > >

Sounds interesting, but I'd like to know if some of our more
adventurous RTW riders can comment on the availability of Diesel when
visiting more remote areas of the world. Also any comments on
reliability? Repairability? Especially when out in the boonies? Wonder
if they (F1) would sponsor a RTW with one of the bikes? Expensive, but
I could always sell a kidney!

Are there any Marines on the list who might have some experience and
insight to this bike?

The new diesel klr does not have the large 7.1 gallon tank (however
sill has the built in rad protection) as I recall due to its good
mileage they have decreased its size quite significantly. If you
look at a current picture you will notice I believe that this is the
case. I remember reading it somewhere a while back not sure when or
where but I am sure a quick search would prove this to be true.
So it won't be quite as bad as carrying 7.1 gallons at least. I
know my klr is heavy enough with the stock tank full of fuel.
