I've been day dreaming about the on again, off again Diesel KLR and am
wondering out loud if the makers would in fact sell only the new
engine and related upgrades. I figure Fred will come up with a
quality change over kit in no time and there will even be listers who
offer to facilitate the installation. Why I'd be willing to bet
within six months of sale there will be change out parties at
locations around the USA all organized on this very list. Perhaps we
can set up a deposit procedure for those interested to illustrate the
demand. Someone make a motion!

Does anybody have a clue of what the price would/should be for that? If it was low enough then I agree that there would be a demand. F1 engineering is looking for somwhere in the neighborhood of two to three
million dollars for testing, tooling, yada, yada, yada... i'm guessing they'd
provide the suc... uh, investor with a diesel bike after all that.
other than that, it's simply not available currently.
since they seem to be claiming that they need to build another production line
for civilian bikes... i'd have to guess that the cost for just the powerplant
without the BS of all the "testing" of complete bikes would still be steep.
in other words, don't hold your breath. more importantly, if you want a KLR,
don't postpone purchasing a current "standard" version waiting for the diesel.

Start with one KLR, $5000; pull engine, split cases, insert new gear set, install diesel upper end, ignition and carb, lets say $3000; start adding other items to the tune of $1000. I can see a civilian version being $9000 before you start adding in a profit margin or the cost of homolguation. And don't forget, casting new engine cases, cnc milling an injector body, add ECU and injector pump. Shit, I'd be happy if they simply sold a kit of the parts they make, nothing from KHI... Basically it'd be an "add your own KLR" kit. It's not like I don't have most of two engines in crates in my garage. I've been out of town for a while and not keeping up with the list, so
this may be old news. If so, I apologize.
An Alert FAQ Reader forwarded an e-mail he received from F1 Engineering,
in which they indicate that they will be making 100 diesel KLRs
available to the public, as well as crate engines. They expect the
bikes to run 20% over MSRP. A "substantial" deposit will be required,
which will be placed in escrow and returned in the event that there is a
problem with release.
Keep an eye on the F1 website for info.

100??? Won't they need to hold a lottery? I'd think 100 wouldn't last
long.
