Check out this USMC KLR I found on Ebay. I'm wondering if it's genuine. I thought they weren't street legal, and every other one I've seen had hand guards that went all the way across the front of the bars. I didnt think the USMC purchased any Gas models. There may have been some early spec ops units but the NATO requirement for JP fuel has been in place for some time now. Maybe I am wrong about that but if true then this would have to be a Street model. The VIN, JKAKLEA12YA058454, doesnt look like a military SN either. Whats more stuck in my mind is that the military doesnt really auction off active fleet military vehicles any more. It is like the Hummvees. They strip them and shelve all usable parts. If you buy a Hummvee it is generaly a batch of chassis being sold as scrap metal. You would need to buy a batch of axles and engine/tranny groups... Used to be they made you cut the chassis but I dont know if that is still true Chris Tim's post regarding known Military model http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/24/automobiles/24KAWASAKI.html Original post USMC KLR 650. Looks like a knock-off to me David. Have seen one or two really nice gas clones done. Recall one by a train engineer who used ammo cans as paniers. Kept a pic of that one it was so unique. Wouldn't it be fun to throw a leg over the real deal and see how it goes in the desert. Anyone ever have chance to do that? Monty

The Marines and all services used Gas KLRs. The early ones were 250's. In the late 90's they went to the 650 and called it a M1030B1 and about 500 were made up to 2002. I have restored 2 of them so far, one Army and one Marine. The marked the tanks as gas only so Pvt Snuffy won't fill them with JP8. As far as I know none of the Diesel Bikes M1030M1 & Mutifuel M2'2 have been released yet. I will put a Military KLR album in the photo section. I have also seen several that the Air Force CTT's had that are grey.

I recently spoke to someone in the USMC, and mentioned this thread to them, about the diesel KRL's that the Marines use. He told me that, although that is not his area of operations, in Iraq he saw gas powered KLR's. He was certain that they were gas, not diesel. So I am leaning towards that the USMC, and the military, does use gas as well as diesel KLR's? My comments have nothing to do with the KLR that was being sold, it might have been a knock off. BTW, my KLR is a conscientious objector, and is down at the nearest public square protesting against the rich and Wall Street. Those are not my political leanings, but my KLR has its own political views. You ought to hear its opinions on synthetic oils and chain lube. It is also anti-diesel. I tease it by pointing out that it is Capitalist "green" and not the "Commie Red" color scheme. Eddie M. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Yeah, my Commie Red KLR voted for WD-40 when I wasn't looking. Adding insult to injury, it has also become addicted to Rotella T6 5W40. And, my Kalifornia KLR is firmly in the Green movement and a genuine Zero Emissions Vehicle. Carbon output since April: Zero Maybe I can sell some of those newfangled Crap and Trade Carbon Credits? (Probably not, it has a PA tag on it) ....I surely ain't gonna buy any.

thumbs down on fuel filter?

Post by Eddie » Mon Oct 24, 2011 9:01 am

The clear plastic filters, sorta funnel-shaped, with a bronze mesh insert should work. "Visu-filter"? Note: It may be a marketing ploy or not, but they now sell one that's ethanol safe. eddie

Concours, but the Connie is fairly fussy about fuel flow and some filters just plain don't work. Anyone out there care to share KLR fuel filter successes?
