Thanks for the added info. It has been several months since I read any oil tests. It can get your head spinning. But since looking into several of them, I am a fan of Mobil synthetics. I use it in my cars and the Motorcylcle blend in my KLR.
That doesn't mean I recommend it, or think everyone should use it. It is what makes me feel I am doing what is best for my KLR. You should do what you believe is best.

Hi Rick,
You've got a pretty good handle on the subject--congrats! To add
another level of detail to your post (if you care) there are two
kinds of polymers: viscosity index improvers (VIIs) and pour point
depressors (PPDs). VIIs increase the weight of the oil when it's at
operating temp (100 degrees C), while PPDs decrease the weight of the
oil when it's very cold (-15 degrees C and below). Synthetic oils
typically need fewer of each, which is good. In a motorcycle where
the engine oil is used in the transmission, especially, the fewer
VIIs needed the better since it means that your oil will shear out of
grade more slowly. (VIIs are easily sheared by the transmission
gears, but the PPDs aren't affected.)

My A15's owner's manual says 10W-40 is the lightest oil recommended. I'd be reluctant to use 5W-40, even if it's synthetic.

Hi Chris! There's no significant difference between a 10W-40 and a 5W-40 at operating temperature (approx. 100 degrees C)--both will be between 12.5 and 16.3 cSt (a measure of viscosity that determines the SAE rating). The "W" weight gives you hints about the viscosity of an oil at ambient temperatures, but realize that even a 0W-40 oil at 20 degrees C is around 20 times thicker than it is at 100 degrees C. In general, no oil is thin enough at startup. -- Blake Sobiloff San Jose, CA (USA)> My A15's owner's manual says 10W-40 is the lightest oil recommended. You are quite right of course. It's just that I find the oil/tyre/exhaust threads quite amusing. They are invariably spawned by innocent questions, reach a peak of technically plausible discussion then degenerate into emotion, often accompanied by name calling and such. The oil/tyre/exhaust wars are great, and I would never discourage them. I hope the person who asked the question eventually understands this and realizes my little remark was in no way meant to belittle or denigrate him. It was just a statement of the inevitability of what results from such a question. -- GW>Funny....when I joined this group, I was under the impression it was designed/established to help ALL KLR riders ;^) >

(Even the results of oil testing can be inconclusive. I"ve
heard of samples sent to 3 different labs from the same batch coming
back with 3 different results. My contention is that oil is like so
many other )
This reminds me of a stunt I pulled for the heck of it about 20
somewhat years ago when one of the Drilling supers was all excited
about getting oil samples every month to the lab of his choosing. I
took 3 samples of the same oil at the same time from the same engine
and sent it to the lab. Gee, got back 3 different reports from (1)
engine needs overhaul due to bearing material in suspension to (2)
glycol in the oil, need to change oil and filters to (3) engine is
fine, run as is till next oil sample. Now these samples were gathered
at operating temp ( being as the engine had been running for 14 days
and still running when drawing the sample into a quart jar, shaking
the jar good before depositing oil into the little sample bottles and
shipping it off.
Uhhhhhhh we suspended sending oil samples to that lab of his choise
after that.
.. Went back to just changing the oil and filters
every 2000 hours.

There is a simple logic to that that cannot be denied. For a "rig", or
commercial operator it certainly is important to know how much engine life
to expect but for the average "cager" or biker, who really cares? Change the
oil and ride. Get on with it.

GTX should only be combined with a weak m.d.p. Saw it in the D.C.
