You might be alright with that. If you're on a trip and need to find some, it might be hard. In fact 20-50 can be hard to find. 10-40 auto oil is still around all over. Changing the visc of oil shouldn't hurt much. Clutch problems via oil seem to be more rumor then fact. Brand of oil is less important then having enough. Zac, Good answer! I'm glad to hear you didn't respond as others have...acting like its such a pain to answer a question they've already heard before. Your answer is bound to make the new folks feel welcome, where as those other replies tend to make people feel stupid and reluctant to ask questions in the future... Funny....when I joined this group, I was under the impression it was designed/established to help ALL KLR riders ;^) Regards to ALL, Scott Ramey wrote: You might be alright with that. Thanks Scott and Zac, I did feel stupid when the other guy answered me. I know it was a relatively mundane question but I just my KLR and wanted to know. -----Original Message----- From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com]On Behalf Of scott quillen Sent: Monday, August 15, 2005 5:30 AM To: Ramey; dsn_klr650@yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [DSN_KLR650] oil Zac, Good answer! Eugene, No problem! There are MANY knowledgeable AND nice folks in this group that will be HAPPY to answer your questions (even if we've heard them before)...so don't be discouraged by the few who lean the other way. It's a GREAT group overall and has helped me more than I can say in the short time I've been a member. A TRULY GREAT resource for the KLR rider...the BEST in my opinion! You are right Scott. I didn't think of it that way. My response was meant to amuse those who have been through multiple oil treads. I wasn't thinking how the newbie would take it. Rick, No problem...I wasn't singling you out...I've seen others post similar responses and I just don't think it's helpful to newbies who come to the group seeking advice/help. I've seen other groups and forums where I'd be afraid to ask ANY question...they're that hostile/unforgiving...those groups/forums really have no useful purpose to exist. A smiley or "winkey", followed by a helpful response might have made the requester feel a little better and realize your light-hearted intent. Good choice. Threre are a lot of options, you've hit on one that's inexpensive, readily available, and proven. I've ridden a lot of trouble-free miles on 10W-40 GTX, now use 20W-50. __Arden

WOOHOO! An oil thread! Thank god, now we can kill the exhaust thread once and for all :-). After extensive research into the characteristics of various oils, I have found the One True Oil for a KLR in my climate: Shell Rotella 5W40 synthetic. Okay, there's oils with better high-temperature and low-temperature characteristics (think true-PAO oils like Amsoil or possibly Mobil 1), but the Rotella exhibits no viscosity breakdown, has excellent film strength, and has a great additive package for a motorcycle, with no friction enhancers to cause clutch slippage and a high phosphorous content for initial startup. All for around $3 a quart in a gallon jug at your local Wal-Mart. Plus a kickin' web site at http://www.rotella.com :-). Let the oil wars begin! -E

Eric, On your advice (or maybe another poster's) I'm now using Rotella (dino) in my KLR - the price is right at WalMart and I love it! Scott Eric Lee Green wrote: genez11 wrote:
