David,
I think you may be leaving one important fact out of your comparison of
synthetic vs. conventional oils. Synthetics are far superior due at least
in large part to the lack of waxes and paraffin's. These could be removed
from conventional oils but the cost would be prohibitive. This info
courtesy of the oil gurus at Mobil Oil. (I owned a fast lube shop and was a
Mobil distributor) I use Mobil One in all my engines, works great.

For winter, 10w40. The rest of the time, 20w50. The sight glass is used
with the bike held level, so you need a friend to help or a convenient
wall to lean the bike against for adding the oil. As far as brand, some
people swear by expensive motorcycle-specific oils. Some swear by far
less expensive automotive oils. The bike seems not to care too much.
Borrow someone's owners manual, that will list the oil weights and
specifications recommended by Kawi. You'll find it includes most of the
oils available.
2.5L is printed on the case next to the glass (at least on the US
bikes), but this amount will put the level above the sight glass.
Or, you can add oil to the top line on the sight glass. People on this
list do it both ways, both swear their way is the right way, and the
bike seems to ignore the difference.
The filler is 6" above the sight glass, on top of the clutch cover.
