Bob: I use drained vegetable oil from the local McDonalds year round. It's free and I can flush it down the toilet when I'm done with it. The motor burns some oil but the exhaust smells good and reminds me of French fries. Thanks.

Synthetic will always flow faster at start up especially when it's cold. 20w-50 Mobil 1 "SG", 10w-40 MX4T , Mobil 1 Delvac 1 5w-40. Tri-Synthetic "Auto" 15w-50 Mobil 1 works great for many Listers. Any of these weights will cover any weather you could possibly ride in. Just make sure the piston rings are seated properly before using. Some say 6000 miles. I say at least 3000. Some have switched at just a few hundred? Glen Meyer- A13 Post Falls, (North) Idaho USA Mobil 1 Junkie- I wish I was on their payroll.

Interesting to see the different viscosity ranges that you guys report for "Mobil 1". Down here in Oz, I bought a jug of the stuff to try out in my 280ZX. The (car) Mobil 1 we get here says 5W-50. Mister_T

What oil type is best for the KLR650? Would a synthetic blend be a better choice than a regular brand?

I'm almost scared to reply to an oil thread, but I'm snowbound once again, and figure I might as well - there's nothing else to do! (Grin) Since the KLR only uses 2.5 quarts, (meaning price, no matter what you buy, isn't an issue), I use the motorcycle specific Spectro oil. I used the conventional 20-50 Spectro until just this winter. At 3350 miles, I switched the bike over to Golden Spectro (synthetic) 20-50, knowing from the reply that I received from a Spectro engineer that the engine was broken in and ready for it. (Actually, more than ready. I guess I could have used it sooner.) Is it better? I have no idea, but it makes me feel better to know that I've made an effort to do the best I could for the bike...
