Hello all! I've been a KLR650 owner only since last Saturday and already I'm hooked! Previous bikes include two 1989 Honda Transalps and a 2002 Suzuki DL1000. So, big trailies are a familiar sight around my place. {I also have a 2008 Honda Gold Wing. } Before buying a new KLR, I had a look around and found information on a doohickey upgrade kit and also on the Thermo-Bob. Both were on the shelf waiting for installation before I even got the new bike home! I opted to get the doo kit with Eagle Mike's torsion spring. I only want to do this once. LOL A friend owns a Mom & Pop m/c repair business and is as excited about the new bike as I am. How much? He's offered his shop lift & tools to do the work for free. Truth be told, I spend an awaful lot of my spare time over there hanging out, turning wrenches with him and wouldn't think of asking for a dime in return. Letting me use his stuff is a really nice gesture on his part, just the same. Anyhow, I hope to learn a lot from the list and look forward to many happy KLR miles! eddie Georgia, USA [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Hey Eddie, I have a goldwing and klr too. It is a good set up; gives you lots of options. Anyway, welcome to the group. Greg To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com From: transalp1@... Hey guys, I am a brand new KLR-650(2009) owner and obviously also very new to this forum. I just wanted to chime in and introduce myself. First off I am very humbled by the amount of generosity of knowledge and commraderie that is displayed here. It is forum's like this that have immediately reinforced my decision to go out on a limb and buy a dual sport even though all my friends are jumping on Harley's and crotch rockets.. So, I am very excited to be a part of the KLR club. I stumbled into being a KLR owner through advice from friends, without knowing fully how rich it's history/caliber was regarded amongst the hard nosed dual sport community. Now that I bought one/ridden mine around, I am happier than a pig in shit that I went this route!! I am Military and bought my KLR from another Military member who is stationed here in North Carolina as well and he had done A LOT of modifications to the bike, so much that I still don't even fully understand how much was done(electrical re-wiring stuff etc). I am only realizing now through forums like this how much was done that he just didn't have the time to dumb it all down for me since I am so new. (for instance the recent discussion about over-riding your diode thing to be able to start the bike out of neutral...Well mine already does that and I just thought they came like that... haha... so yea, stuff like that. Anyway I will try my hardest not to bog you guys down with stupid questions, for the most part I just wanna be a sponge and soak up all the awesome knowledge you guys have... but soon enough I am sure I will run across something that will be way out of my league and I will have to lean on you guys. I actually do have one serious question already and that is wether or not anyone has had problems with their oil sight glass before?? mine is reading very low, but according to the previous owner is definitenly full, (based on suggestions from here) I went out and bought some rotella T 15-40 and poured a tiny bit in to see if I could get the sight glass to budge but nothing... It rides fine though. My next step is to completely change the oil to ensure it's fille properly... But, that doesn't fix my sight glass problem and I am worried (based on reading other's experience's w/ this bike) that if it is buring oil, I wouldn't ever know... Take Care, Dominick

If you (currently) can't see any oil in the sight glass, I'd be concerned that there is not enough oil in the motor. There's been a few who have come through here that have burnt their motor up because of low oil level. What's cheaper, a few quarts of oil and a new oil filter or a motor re-build? Jake Reddick Fla. Good morning Dominick Like I'm sure others here will suggest change the oil and filter, put in 2.5 litres as suggested. On my bike and a couple others I've looked at with 2.5 litres installed even after you run the bike and wait a couple minutes for the oil to drain back it will be just at the top or just above the top of the sight glass with the bike standing level, not on the side stand. It doesn't take much lean on the side stand to make the oil level appear very low in the sight glass and depending on how much sag your suspension has or how level your side stand supports your bike there will be a big difference in the sight level, that being said mike is the previous generation but as far as I know the cover with the sight glass which is reported to read slightly over full with the spec'd 2.5 litres installed and I don't think you could obstruct the flow of oil to the sight glass so it read wrong. Have a great day.....Greg ________________________________ From: Dominick To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wed, April 27, 2011 1:14:54 AM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] New Member Hey guys, I am a brand new KLR-650(2009) owner and obviously also very new to this forum. Welcome Dominick! To address your oil concerns, here's what I found with my 09': I like to lean the bike a little left & right during draining to get every bit of what I can that might be trapped in the covers, crevices, etc.. When I first drained the engine oil completely and replaced the filter, 2 liters took it to the top of the sight glass with the bike standing dead vertical on level pavement . That left it 500cc short of the recommended fill. 20% is a lot of oil. So, I added another 1/2 liter and have been doing it that way ever since. Now, pre-ride inspections include standing the bike upright to see if the sight glass is completely full and then leaning the bike left a little until a bubble appears. I've sorta figured an acceptable amount of lean that's = to "ride" or "add a little oil". =) eddie

Hi D- Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you have found a good machine for you. It also sounds like the PO has put on some nice accessories as well. You will find lots of interesting rides at Ft. Bragg and Camp Lejeune NC = tank and jeep trails plus the farm-to-Market roads in between. (or unless you are at Elizabeth City, and then you have the Great Dismal Swamp to investigate!) In the links, over to your left, there is this link "FAQ". http://www.bigcee.com/klr650faq.html You will find this very helpful. Many print out the entire file for easy reference. Another site: http://www.klr650.marknet.us/ Many good things here as well. Follow the menu on the left column and click on the article. If you don't have a center stand, this might be of immediate interest: http://www.klr650.marknet.us/lift.html If you are new to mech'ing, some torque wrenches will be very helpful to you as well: or snug plus 1/8 of a turn. YMMV. Tell us where you live; many have tech days near by =
