(klr650) paris hilton skin ointment?
This morning I went to my local Auto/Bike store, it's oil and filter change time, I located my ol' faithful oil and kept on kind of looking around ... you know..Saturday morning ... warm up the old '05 red, drain oil, take filter out,replace ..darn it's hot.. have a beer.. Anyways, the price sticker caught my eyes.. ready?? $15.75 !!!! one quart !!! Motorcycle oil " Purple something "...OMG !!! I thought I was in the beauty dpt .at Ralph Lauren !!!
Do some people put $ 16.00 times 2.5 in the crankcase or is it to be used on their skins ?

It was probably Royal Purple. It's good oil, but not THAT good.
Nice alternatives in Synthetics that the KLR likes:
Rotella T6 5W-40
Mobil 1 "Turbo Diesel Truck" 5W-40 (makes your transmission shift like buttah)
In dinosaur juice:
Rotella T Triple Trotection 15W-40
Mobil Delvac 15W-40
Chevron Delo 15W-40
...and believe it or not, a well-reviewed dino oil that maintains viscosity better than all tested motorcycle-specific oils: Good 'ol Castrol GTX 10w-40.
DON'T USE 20w-50!!! It's too thick!

Mobil 1's good stuff, whether it's the motorcycle-specific kind or not.
I use the Big-Rig diesel truck oil because based upon my research, the qualities that make a good diesel truck oil also make a good motorcycle oil, e.g. heat resistance (it's made to lube and cool turbos, so it's good with high-heat and high rotational velocity), It's shear resistant, it has excellent surface strength and "sticks" to gears well, it's low in molybdenum so it won't make your clutch slip, and it resists sludging over the long haul.
The additive package that Mobil uses is outstanding, you can feel it instantly in how much smoother your transmission shifts and it remains that way throughout the life of the oil.
If you change every 3,000 miles or so there's no harm in using dino oil, and Delvac works well (for 13 bucks a gallon!). I like Rotella T6, but after trying the Mobil 1 5w-40 in the DL1000 I may switch. I put Delvac in the KLR this time and I'm really liking the increased smoothness - it's easier to find neutral and the clutch is less grabby on engagement than with the T6.

I don't know about the 'motorcycle specific' stuff, but I've found the
'regular Synthetic to be on par, or a bit cheaper, then Mobil 1. {'Advance
Auto' and 'Pep Boys' in the Philly suburbs}
In about another 200 miles I'm going to change BACK to SYN after using the
Rotella 'dino' for the Top End job break-in. Was using Royal Purple, but may
change to Mobil 1 so I can see how soon the oil 'darkens'.

In my experience, almost any oil darkens almost immediately in my KLR.
In the DL, I have about 2,000 miles on the Mobil 1 5w-40 and it's still has a nice, golden hue.

Jeff,
I understand; it's because the engine oil 'shares duty' with the
transmission.
It is also my understanding that almost all {V-Twin 'Harley Types' excepted}
modern MC's are 'wet sump' and have the same characteristic.
Regards,
Ron
