Lately there have been a few more emails to this list from some members that have a virus. These emails send out a link that directs you to a Canadian drug company. These messages usually don t have a subject and have a link or something that doesn t pertain to motorcycling or to our list. I would caution everyone to have a current anti-virus program and make sure you have the latest updates. If you see a message here without a subject and just a link, you can bet it is has been generated by a virus and shouldn t be opened. Anyone that posts a message to this list with links to drug companies or any other type of virus will be placed on moderated status until they clear up their computer. Fred List Admin. thought it was surging but it wasn't

Post by fmichaelhilton » Wed Aug 03, 2011 5:03 pm

Recently I noticed that my 08 had started to what felt like surging. I would mostly notice it in town, 2nd or 3rd gear steady speed. First thought that I might have a diaphram leak on the petcock even though I did not see any evidence (even consider having my friend Jeff send me his modified petcock). The bike has 24K, so that the diahram was a cheap part replacement. Needless to say no improvement. I had noticed that my chain seemed more than a little slack, so up on the rack to make the adjustment. I adjusted it to spec. where I found the tightest place. When I did this I had a great deal of slack at other place, most other places. So I went a little tighter at the tightest place. I rode the bike with no noticible improvement. The front and rear sprockets did not seem to have noticable wear nor had the chain reached the stretch limits, but I thought, 24K was enough on the original chain. I replace chain and front and rear sprockets.... "I can't believe the difference." No more surging, smooth acceleration and smooth running at slower constant speed. "Surging" is not always associated with fuel mixture, air mixture or leaks. This new knowledge comes from a fellow who has always ridden BMW's, with shaft drives. At least on my old R100GS would start to vibrate when the U-joint was going bad. I'm sure I have more to learn about being part of the Chain Gang... Mike Hilton Louisiana

In my experience, when you run into a situation where a chain "won't stay adjusted", it's begun to spit rollers and it's done. I bet if you go inspect your old chain you'll find cracked and/or missing rollers.

...during the time Jeff describes; an advanced case of chain deterioration might manifest itself as 'pebbles' hitting your left foot. Pebbles? Iron/steel pebbles that look like chain rollers being thrown off by the chain that somehow strike your left foot. Not sure how the physics of that happens; just reporting that is what happened to me. Throwing rollers: Oddly enough it might be gradual = one/hour or one/hundred miles, or it may have a sudden onset and spit a whole bunch of rollers in a short period of time. While changing the chain: Look (carefully) inside your C/S guard, the wiring and all the little hidden crevasses; you may discover a large amount of chain-flotsam there as well. revmaaatin.

I did a ride with a character who lives in La Verne, CA. After the dirt riding, I noticed how bad his chain looked. It was missing some rollers. It wasn't spitting roller though. I told him to ride slowly. Despite my advice, he road psycho; over 80 on the fwy with the chain like that. He made it back which surprised me. I thought it was total mental. J#3
