backfires and hard to start

Post by robinvaneyk » Thu Apr 21, 2011 5:27 pm

My KLR is startting to become hard to start and is starting to backfire when it turns over. Where should I focus my attention first? (spark plug, valve adjustment, etc...) Thanks, Robin

Battery voltage and valves. 10+ volts when cranking. and very likely you have tight valves. revmaaatin.

<><><><><><> <><><><><><> Robin, Maybe give us a little more information like: - year of bike - miles on bike - maintenance history of valve adjustments etc - list of engine related mods like air cleaner, carb work or exhaust changes - age of fuel in the tank - temp when trying to start the bike - procedure you are using to try to start the bike Without more info we're just guessing. So for now my guess is you should do a valve adjustment. : ) Best, Jeff Saline ABC # 4412 South Dakota Airmarshal Airheads Beemer Club www.airheads.org The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650, 79 R100RT . . ____________________________________________________________ Groupon.com Official Site 1 huge daily deal on the best stuff to do in your city. backfires and hard to start

Robin.. Check your air box. a tight intake valve would certainty make the bike backfire through the carb. Bu my guess is that you are experiencing a backfire in the exhaust . I just had the same issue. Bike started ok cold. But stop for gas or meeting friends and go to leave.. . Hard starting and a backfire. The battery just barley had enough to get it to go a couple of times. Did a tuneup late winter!!.. What gives??. Out with a couple of friend stopped for gas and got thinking ... Feels like its flooding a bit or loading up .. Wile the others were gassing up, I quickly pulled the air filter cover . To my surprise i had a passenger.. A mouse had decided to make a nest in the air box.., And that little bugger stuffed that thing full in about a week and a half. Cleared the box and the air filter Bike ran like new . Best of all it was an ease fix Ken ________________________________ From: revmaaatin To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thu, April 21, 2011 6:38:52 PM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: backfires and hard to start

backfires/ mothballs

I started using mothballsin every storage area, When I had a vet. we put old socks with mothballs by every tire and one by the engine. After 1 yr we found a nest of EATEN WIRES, Never happened again after the Mothballs. I have friends in FL. that travel most of the yr. they told me about it and how they put them HEAVY in the houses and all storage areas when Gone for a while. "ENOUGH TO MAKE YOUR!!! EYES WATER" They say. Mothballs are a pestiside! but hleps with mice, rats, snakes, etc. TOO.
