Is this shutting down as in backing off the throttle or shutting down when you turn the key off? If closing the throttle while you are riding is causing backfires then it is possible that the "coasting enricher" part of the carby is somehow faulty. Mister_T

do you know if the coasting enrichenner is adjustable? and yes ,it is when you shut down from speed,ie the faster you are going the more it backfires when stutting down ,youres hopefully Gary

It is not normally an adjustable part, although resourceful people will find a way if required. Have a look at diagrams of the carby to see how the coasting enricher works. Maybe the diaphragm is damaged, but try other simple things first before attacking the carby. There are only really two moving parts in the coasting enricher, the spring and the diaphragm, but there is a small O-ring that can get lost when the cover is taken off (which is on the LHS of the carby). [b]The "coasting enrichener" (or air cut off valve) is not adjustable. It is located on the side of your carb under a plate held on by a couple of screws. This valve is a rubber diaphragm that is vacuum operated and returned by a spring. There might be a small o-ring under that cover as well, so don't loose any parts that may come flying out. Hold the diaphragm up to a light to see if you can see any holes or thin spots. If there is any place for a leak there, then your coasting enrichener will not work. i've noted that the coasting enrichner has a rubber pipe coming from it,this is'nt connected to anything,as i have a k&n airfilter fitted,i assume it would be fitted to the airbox in standard form,does anyone know if this could be having a diverse effect ,causing the bike to backfire?,if not i guess i'll have to get my hands dirty and strip down the coasting enrichner! also if the diafram is holed or split ,can it be stuck or welded,smelted back toghether, thanks to all who have replied,Gary

[confused look from Mister_T] The coasting enricher isn't supposed to have any hose coming out of it.

I would suggest you study the workshop manual first.
