All this talk about loud pipes and Harleys ...... well they are not the only factor in pissing off non motorcycle people. Yesterday I heard a dirt bike going through my neighborhood. It was my next door neighbor kicking out his CR450 F down the street numerous times on the back wheel. Kyle is nice enough guy and bigger than me so I just went out and chewed the fat with him (while he chewed toobacky - one of those). He ripped off down the street again clearly terrorizing a woman walking her poodle. Last week I got stopped in the neighborhood on my Connie for doing 10 over (speed limit 25) but the cop let me go saying he was looking for 2 sport bike riders zooming through the hood at about 60 mph. I was coming through Albuquerque recently and 2 sport bike riders were zooming through I -25 on the back wheel. Now guys, I know showing off may seem like fun and I used to be one. I have scars to prove it. You are not endearing yourself to the non motorcycle public doing this. If you want to do a wheelie at 70 - 90 mph, pick a back road or do it in the dirt. I don't want to have to stop and call 911 if a truck runs over your dumb ass after you drop it nor do I want my tax dollars to pay for you in ICU. Kyle wasn't wearing a helmet. Head gear of choice for a red neck - a gimme cap turned around backards of coarse .... which would done him little good at the speed he was going. Criswell

A few thoughts. Just as my right to swing my fist ends where your nose begins, your right to make excessive noise, as defined by the law(s), ends where my ears begin. Noise annoys. Loud pipes lose rights. I have a t-shirt the says, in BIG letters: "LOUD PIPES ARE UNAMERICAN". I've gotten dirty looks, but NOBODY has challenged my RIGHT as an AMERICAN to wear it!. That, of course, would also be unAmerican! Bob B PS I have 11 motorcycles, including a Honda CR480 and a Husaberg 501. Are they loud? Yup. Is there an appropriate time and place to ride them? Yup. It's ironic that loud pipes would be an issue on a KLR 650 forum since the only comments I ever get is how quiet my (stock muffler) KLR is. The "loud pipes crowd seems to breakdown into several groups: - I like loud pipes, screw you. (The "rebel" crowd. Not much you can do about them). - I have loud pipes, notice me. (The "look at me" crowd. Not much you can do to help them). - Loud pipes save lives (The "dubious logic" crowd. If these people are relying on loud pipes to get car drivers to notice and/or avoid them, they're in trouble). It goes back to the old business problem of "the commons". Any publicly shared resource is subject to governmental controls. Peace and quiet included. The government can't necessarily stop you from saying something, but that doesn't guarantee you a government subsidized bullhorn on a neighborhood street corner at 2AM in the morning.
