Speaking of hosers, what do all the people from the Great White North do with their KLR's when it gets cold?  It has been snowing here and temperatures getting into the teens.  I tried to crank my bike over the weekend, but it ran the battery down before it would start!  Is the KLR just that cold natured, or is it possible that it has some problem that I should be aware of?  It ran beautifully the last time I ran it about 3 weeks ago, and I DID drain the float bowl before I parked it. Living in Mississippi, it not suppose to get this cold that I can't ride!  I would hate to think I need to get a battery tender... Lamar A14

I dont know about the Canadian side of the border but here in North Dakota the KLR is very hesitant to start when its cold, beyond about 20F. I think it has something to do with the lean stock jetting. I didnt even try it when it was -20 last week=-) Don KLRA13 "Salad Shooter" 73 Suzuki TS185

Well, I'm not from the Great White North, But it's been getting coold here too..... I response to your post, I have a really dumb question. Is the petcock on? Does the tank have enough gas in it? To make sure, switch to reserve. Gas will contract when cold, and if the fuel level was marginal to begin with, that reduction in volume will lower the gas level to below the petcock's main snorkel. Well,...I think I received some very good information about my KLR not starting when the temps are
below 50 F. I checked the battery off the tender and the voltage was 12.6 vdc after about an hour.
Voltage on the tender was 13.2 volts. So the battery seems OK.
Can't drill out the carb mixture adjustment just yet. I have an unheated building, but with very good ventilation.
But I did check and that mod has not been done. Just waiting for warmer temps in Northern Arkansas and I'll
    get that mod done.
I did try to start the bike again and paid attention to the speed of the engine turning over. Slow, very, very
slow compared to normal. Well, I'm running Mobile 1 20w50, best oil,...right? So,...I tilted the bike upright and checked the oil sight glass. No oil ! But, slowly, the oil came up to the top mark. Did I say, slowly? Really slow ! I'm thinking the suggestion of thick oil is probably the easiest to try. I'll change the oil this week and try again next cold spell.
    Thanks for the suggestions.

Attachments : Two things come to mind.

1, The voltage seems a bit low. If the battery isn’t fully charged, that could explain that.

2, The oil seems awful thick.

As a rule of thumb, you want synthetic (just because it’s better) and the thinnest oil you can run while still maintaining proper pressure at a given rpm.

If Kawi says that you’re supposed to have 60 psi at 6000 rpm, then you aim for the thinnest oil that will maintain that.  For instance, if a 0w-20 will maintain proper pressure, then run that.

I used to run 5w-50 in my Tengai, but it's been getting harder to find because of the greenie "high-viscosity oil burns too much gas" lobby. Just used the last of it on my last oil change. I'll go back to Rotella 5w-40, which is what I use in my car. But, I wouldn't be surprised if we see 40-weight oils becoming hard to find in the not-so-distant future. That thick oil is hard on the pump at cold temps. Getting it circulated  up to the top end is slow. I run a 10w40 in winter and a 15w40 rest of year.   Bob     To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com From: pkpipkins@...
