I used to have an *empty*, full-sized semi-auto pistol holster attached to a Givi side case on my DL1000.
It was a psychological deterrent and made a great place to store a plastic side stand "foot" when it wasn't in use.

I dont like putting fancy electronics on my KLR. Too many loopdeedoos in the pine barrens and too much mud ad water up here in CT. I have a sort of pad lock looking thing that is an audible alarm. I think it was made for computers and computer bags. I will look at the brand when I get home but I think they had them at Staples. I just leave it in the tank bag and clip it to the tank bag handle in front and arm it when needed. It isnt noticeable and if someone tries to steel the tank bag or the bike it squeels like a bandshee

Aerostich has them $29.+-, has retractable cable. Mine? the slightest touch & it goes off. Can use with or with out the alarm on.

Thanks to all who responded to my post. I think that for now I will go with a Zena alarm/disc lock and a 3/4 cover. I'll be able to use these on nearly any bike. I am still considering a more comprehensive system, for both bikes. Eddie's suggestion about the empty holster, serious or not, seems like a great idea when parked at hiking trails. Gerry

I install these things for a living and I have a Viper Merlin on my KLR....It's got a starter kill , tilt sensor, shock sensor, light flasher, 2- small remotes and a battery backup siren....An alarm won't run your battery down when it's just armed and protecting your bike ...The LED flashes about once per second for the first 24 hours it's armed and then slows to once every 2 seconds after 24 hours.....When it triggers the alarm it's only for about 60 seconds then it re-arms itself....I can't bump into mine without it going off, so imagine if someone want's to get into my cases or remove something from it at the hotel I know some one will hear it....A Kryptonite disc lock will keep them from rolling it away but when it does it's still gonna make alot of noise.   Mike Huber Carlsbad, NM   To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com; gerryp@... I learned that trick in an OLD "Easy rider" Mag, back about 1980. NOW .... I ALSO CARRY LOADED ONES.

I agree locks just slow down theives, BUT   While I carry full coverage on every thing I don't want to be standing in a parking lot with my trip ruined OR PERSONAL stuff stolen. If you don''t care, Leave your key in the bike.   I want to walk a little away from the bike or even go into a gas station or restaurant and if any issues, others will notice. (HOPEFULLY)   Motorcycle consumer news did a testing/review of a fair priced alarm WITH MOTION detector AND REMOTE control. (turn off if you want, panic etc.) only $149. (+$10? sh.)   Internatrix TW-1000 alarm (4 Edress google the Co.)   MCN, gave it GOOD reviews.      and  MCN magazine has a VERY GOOD REP. I WILL be getting one (2) soon for EACH bike.

While I agree that locks can be defeated, most thiefs are lazy and will walk away from a lock unless they really want that bike and it is in the same spot all the time. They run your battery down, they usually end up the reason why you can't get the bike to start one day after filling up in a petrol station 30miles from home at 2 am. If you bike is taken then the alarm is not much of a deterrent as most people have learnt to ignore them. In the UK the alarm systems that get you savings on insurance etc usually have to be 3yrs old then you need to fit an alarm, the savings don't outweigh the cost. Spend your money on a ground anchor and a fsking big lock. If your out you just need to chain it up correctly with a good lock. Jack
