On Tuesday at 5:30pm my beloved Tengai was destroyed when a young man with 6 months (car) driving experience chose to pull out of a side street directly in front of me. Fortunately I was riding at no more than 20-25 mph, and although I did go over the handlebars and the front of his car, my injuries are miraculously fairly minor. Just a whiplash and lots of bruising. Please be careful out there guys, you can take all the precautions in the world but you can't account for that one moment when someone else takes their eye off the ball. Chris

Dang, Chris! Glad you are relatively unharmed! As they say, bikes can be replaced. People can't. Hang in there and let us know what you end up riding next. eddie

Wow... sorry for your loss. Do you still have the bike... or what's left of it? If so, I hope you picked up every bit of the fairing off the road. We can rebuild it. We have the technology! Glad you aren't toast. Mark On Thu Nov 4 4:17 , "Chris" sent:

" We can rebuild it. We have the technology!"    Oh, great, a six million dollar KLR.  It had to happen someday.   Sorry about the Tengai.   Stephen

That Tengai was the prettiest (KLR). Stupid they quit making it but I guess it didn't sell. Criswell

That's because it was about 7 years ahead of its time.  If they started cranking them out in '96, they'd sell like hotcakes, especially in North America IMO. BTW, some trivia: In 1990, at $3,299 it was $300.00 more than the sticker price of a standard KLR650. Although only *really* available in North America for 2 years ('89-'90, with a few '91 bikes that I think were grey-market or Canada only), they were produced from '89-'94.  Only a few countries got to see all 5 model years. klr versus yam and links

Post by stuart sullivan » Thu Nov 04, 2010 1:11 pm

Thanks for the info on the springs,my seasons done up here in the Great White but will check it out next year.having said that we have no snow on the ground yet and the temps are still quite balmy which is quite weird for this time of the year,my plates are still good for another two weeks so i might have to pull the beast out of hibernation.                                                                          Stu. What do you weigh? if from 180 to 230lb, start with a spring in the 400lb/in range (or in short, a 400lb spring). 240 to 290, try a 500lb spring. That would probably be the spring you would use with stock suspension. Bob Bell recommended a 500-550 progressive spring when he redid my shock. I weigh about 250. With preload on 2, I have just under 3 inches of sag. If I add luggage, it sags to just under 3 1/2''. If I were to lower with links, I figure I could probably hit my sag by raising preload. That's what you want, sag in the neighborhood of 3 inches. If your weight is at the upper end of the range for the spring, you might need to go to a stiffer spring for lowering links. Some manufacturers, Eibach, for example, rate their springs in kg/mm. The conversion factor is something like 56 or 57, so an 8.8kg spring is roughly equivalent to a 500 lb spring. HTH
