Well, maybe. Poor choices affect the next owner as well as the community at large. and-- Poor oil choices will affect the poor smuck that buys your bike as well. We never really own a KLR--we are merely a caretaker/place holder for the next owner. If you want to abuse a bike with poor choices, it your prerogative--show some class and admit, "I flogged this one" if you go to sell it. revmaaatin. the 4th owner of a well cared/loved KLR.> > > > --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, Horton Oliphant wrote: > > > > Well, I guess this is better than politics and religion.> > > > Alan Henderson A13 Iowa > > At least with oil, your choices affect only yourself. > L. >

Hey - let me add some more OIL to the fire. I had an '03 Suzuki Bandit 1200 from new, and after hearing from a guy who drag-raced HIS B1200 running Mobil 1 CAR 5w-30 ENERGY CONSERVING oil, I changed MINE over to Mobil 1 CAR 10w-30 ENERGY CONSERVING (mainly because I had 10w-30 in my shop used in my cars) and ran it that way for about 18,000 miles with NO clutch problems ever! And don't forget - the B1200 makes about 104 HP!!!
Remember - it's YOUR bike, so run whatever 'floats your boat', but Mobil 1 CAR oil floats MINE!
Cheers,
Ed

Mobil 1 15w-50 synthetic in my KLR and my Versys, and am very happy to do so. The KLR has 45,000 miles on M 1 and the V has 16,000. Both changed to M 1 early. > > Cheers, > > Ed > > > > > > > > ~~~It's hard to argue with success and Eddie here has been running car oil, specifically Mobil One full syn 15/50 in his motorcycle engines (w/wet clutch) and no clutch slippage > > > I used this same oil in a Honda ST 1100 motor for 70 K miles with nary a slip from the wet clutch. In that motor my intial reason to use the red cap full syn Mobil One was to eliminate the gear snatch prevelant when shifting from 1st into 2nd...it worked but in that motor, short shifting also helped there as well. FWIW, I was doing 8-10 K mile oil change intetrvals as 8 K intervals was what the Honda factory spec'd for that motor. Having said that, I think I would be suspicious using that same interval in the KLR motor, although the 08' factory nmanual says to change at 8 K miles? Maybe it would be okay. > > > I don't buy into the shear force argument for changing oil sooner (if using full syn)...the argument that because the sump oil is the same oil the tranny gears *shear* this same oil should be changed more often. Guess what?, the ST 1100 slso uses tranny gears shearing the sump oil and uses gear driven camshafts, so more shearing going on yet the oil has been proven it can left in the crank case for 8 K miles. I respect other's differing opinions. It's your motor, do what you want with it > > > Many many many ST 100 pilots have used Red Cap Mobil One (car oil) in their ST's. A personal friend a few hour's ride from me has over 250 K miles on his ST 1100 (he's still riding it) using red cap Mobil One (car oil). The heads have never been off this motor FWIW. Hahaha, right. J You d think that if oil was made out of dinosaurs that we would ve run out by now. Luckily, oil is a renewable resource, albeit slow, so we ll have it for quite some time yet. From: Jeff Khoury [mailto:jeff@...]
...when I was a boy we used to squeeze our motor oil fresh, by hand. Just grab the nearest dinosaur and start squeezin'. You young whippersnappers have SOOOO easy!

From: "The Reverend" A lot of people refer to crude based oils as "dinosaur based", so I suspect
advanced age has something to do with it.
