fan fuse

Post by blyskowski » Fri Dec 07, 2001 10:37 am

Any one having problems with the fan fuse on a 2001 KLR650? Mine blew and looked like it was good. A continuity check showed it was good. Turned out to have a hairline crack (I've seen this before). I replaced with the 10 amp spare that was mounted with it, and it blew in 30 seconds, same place, same way. I replaced with a 6 amp fuse and it has been fine for couple hundred miles. I suspect vibration. I have not reattached the fuse to the original mount, will eventually rubber mount it. The bike only has 12,500 miles on it. Should I start carrying a supply of spares? Bob

fan fuse

Bob: Replace with an ATO 10amp fuse and fuse holder. I would also replace the fuses and holders under the seat. Check out for more info: http://www.dualsportnews.com/klr/klrfuse.html John --- blyskowski wrote:

It's in Jim's diagram, near the top center... It says that the fuse is only found in 1990 and later bikes, so maybe the base manual doesn't show it? There could also be crud in the motor keeping it from turning freely... Have you tried cleaning it out/oiling it? Krokko -- Dr. J. oily timing check

Post by spike55_bmw » Tue Oct 26, 2010 3:01 am

Back in the old days, I did damage the Woodruff key while putting a slightly misaligned flywheel back on. The engine kind of ran a little worse for several months. I had cause to open it up again and when I looked at the Woodruff key, I saw that 25% of the leading edge been flattened / shaved by the sharp edge of the flywheel groove. The edge of the flywheel groove was also slightly flattened. The net effect was to retard the timing by some degrees (small change at the hub was amplified at the perimeter where the ignition pickup signal is produced). Bought a new key and had to dress up the flywheel groove a little so it had a sharp edge again to catch the Woodruff key. I've gotten better (got the feel) at getting the flywheel on properly. fan fuse

Post by timoteo_del_panama » Tue Oct 26, 2010 5:53 am

For the second time in 6 weeks my fan fuse blew. I could understand if it occurred right away(it would be a short). Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is? Thanks Tim
