Last night I removed the plug from the mixture adjustment screw. I want to try to solve the low speed surging problem my 07 has always had. It does not look possible to adjust this screw with the engine warmed up and running, as my hands would be all over the hot exhaust. Any suggestions on how to adjust this screw with the engine running? How many turns out is typical for proper adjustment? Craig Kahler

I'd start with about 1 1/2 to 2 turns out.  I sell an adjustable air screw that you can turn with your fingers, if that would help you adjust your mixture.   See where your stock air screw is set at.  Most will be set from Kawasaki from around less than one to closed.  Most air screws should be set from 1/2 turn to 3 turns.  If you need to adjust your air screw outside of these limits, then you will have to change your pilot jet too. Warm up the bike, start at the factory setting, or just far enough open to idle. 2. Slowly open (ccw) until you find the point of highest idle, then close (cw) 1/4 turn. 3. Yup, that screw is an invitation to a nasty burn. You can give yourself half a chance of coming away unscathed by cutting down the shank of an Apex screwdriver bit and using a thick slice of 1/4" fuel hose over the remaining end to give your fingers something to grab. Or try an adjustable fuel screw. Unless you are going to be changing elevation a lot, you will probably just leave the screw where it is once you have found the right setting.
