annoying slight 'back fire'
Upon de-accelatation in gear,,,,,,,,,or after reving slightly at full
stop. Have drained/refilled with fresh gas and included
the almighty SeaFoam. It's a 2008 with about 4500 miles. Have NOT ridden
in a while, started each day and run for at
least (10) minutes to make sure everything is ok.
Duh, I am NOT mechanic and such this is a new sound thought I would
throw it out there and see if anyone hits it! the
only thing I have done is adjust the tensioner and change oil every 1500
miles, like to change oil I guess.
Thanks!

Only my sugestion and practice on KLR's not ridden regularly - Get an allen
wrench that fits the float bowl drain screw and let all the fuel out. Also
put Seafoam gas additive in the tank so when it's stared , Seafoam is in the
system. 10 minutes of running is probably doing more harm than good as the
oil does not get warm enough to boil off water that condenses in the
crankcase. I simply let the bike 'rest' and keep the battery charged with
routine connections to a Battery Tender.
This advice is worth what you paid for it.

That was it as they where quite loose. Thanks for the input.

Ok Seafoam is great stuff, but its not a mechanic in a can, if something needs fixing it needs fixing.
Not hearing the sound, it could be a few things, first thing that pops in my head is the header connection at the jug, make sure its tight, mine loosened up about a year or two after owning, also check the connection behind the rear brake master, where the can slips over the header pipe. Air getting into the exhaust system up stream will cause backfires.
To me that would be the first thing I check.
Mine and most others KLR "pop" on decel, until the Pilot Circuit (idle mixture alot call it) EPA cap is drilled, pulled and the mix is richened about 1 3/4 turns out from a soft bottom. There is a better way to set that, but involves bike running, adjustments made next to a hot motor can get into that or look up how to hit the sweet spot on pilot circuit. Typically its around 1 3/4 turns out some more others less depending on jetting, exhaust systems ect ect.
Others will chime in I am sure with other ideas.

Mine does it ever since I ant-tweeted my exhaust by hammering in a screw driver to split the VW perforations.

Just came in from the garage replacing my upper subframe bolts (One went missing)
I too have had backfiring and a noisy (ticking) towards the front of the bike.
After the subframe was fixed I set about changing the oil, started up the bike and "carefully" stuck my hand through the pipe and felt the exhaust was puffing about my underneath the exhaust header bolts.
Indeed they too were very loose.
Spent the last two hours going over the bike adding more "blue locktite". The question is, how many gallons of loctite are required to consider my red KLR blue?

#ygrps-yiv-1881076315 p {margin:0;}Just buy stock in Loctite and be done with it.
Every month or two I go around the bike with a ratchet and check everything. I've lost a bunch of bolts. Keep an eye on your footpeg, sidestand, subframe, luggage rack (if you have one)...
Also, check your intake bolts, as I've seen them loosen up as well.

You may have to buy Loctite in litres, since it's a metric bike.
What Jeff said, along with anything that holds the plastics and muffler/tailpipe on. I always travel with zip ties and wire too, since I lost a couple of bolts off the fairing on my 2008's first trip into the dirt trails in the Mendocino National Forest. The bike also dropped its tail pipe on that trip, which I was able to put back together with clipped wire from a fallen fence. That was supposedly a recall issue, but I keep an eye on the bolt now nonetheless.
Is there anything I should do differently for the bolts that have to be taken off repeatedly, e.g. the seat bolts or the ones holding the plastic side panels on? They're starting to build up impressive piles of light blue dust and I'm concerned I'm going to gum things up in the long run.
