the automotive FRAM's have the filter media glued to cardboard endcaps not metal endcaps like all the other automotive oil filters. Our KLR filters all have the metal endcaps. on the Automotive FRAM filters the internal bypass inside the filter is weak and sometimes doesn't work at all. that means your filter isn't filtering. its just allowing the dirty oil to recirculate through the engine. there is a reason the FRAM's sell for $2.99 and the other filters go for $6.00 or more. there are some websites that show the FRAM internals compared to other brands.> in my truck and bike. > > any particular (or quantifiable) reason that they suck? > > erik > > On Saturday, January 15, 2005, at 11:48 AM, dumbazz_650 wrote: > > > Anything but Fram! I have been using Fram filters on vehicles as long as I have been
driving them.
I have no problems with Fram considering I have 3 vehicles all over
100,000 and one pushing 200,000 (4 banger Mazda Truck) that have had
Fram filters fitted at almost all changes.
But for the KLR Emgo are cheap and have the same basic build as a Fram.
Maybe Fram had "a" bad filter and the internet blew it outta
proportion, kinda maybe like a doohickey, but when a few people are
reporting lever/spring failures and there is a nice aftermarket part
that can keep that problem away seems to have a ROI value worth the
expenditure.

Are there any tests on oil filters that prove one is better for the KLR650 than the rest. Or are they all about the same. I saw a couple e-mails about Kawasaki oil filters not fitting well, and inconsistent pleats. Any recommendations.

I get my oil filters from www.bikebandit.com I buy 12 at a time, emgo filters, $1.74 each, $6.00 shipping. I order a few extras because the shipping is the same$6.00 on what ever you order. I have had no problems with these filters, unlike some of the other brands not fitting.> > Rick A17

Ok, here's the dilemma ... now kawasaki dealers for at least 150miles
and well I have a parts dept right beneath me but they don't deal with
any kawasaki dealers, so what I'm curious about is, does anyone know
any part #'s of kralinator or any other oil filters that aren't
kawasaki OEM that fit in the klr650.
My dealer proved useless as he sent me 2 filters and a couple gallons
of oil, but the filters were just your typical kawasaki oil filter not
the paper ones the klr uses
Thanks

If your local dealer is not reliable, call Fred at Arrowhead Motorsports (Google for him, I have him bookmarked in my browser but that's not here) or go to http://www.ronayers.com and order the filter, o-ring, and drain plug washer from their microfiche on your model. Note that due to shipping, if you're going the ronayers.com route you'll probably want to order a couple of sets at a time. It also takes them a while to get the stuff to you, but if you have no local dealer, 2 weeks is still a shorter period of time than, well, forever> My dealer proved useless as he sent me 2 filters and a couple gallons > of oil, but the filters were just your typical kawasaki oil filter not > the paper ones the klr uses

See message 135395 for other KLR650 oil filter part numbers.
Don't forget to inspect your oil filter for defects before installion.
I have found a Fram(Korea) and a Kaw.(Japan) oil filter this year
where the filter media/paper was not fully bonded/sealed to the end
caps and would have allowed oil to bypass the filter. Makes you wonder
about oil filter quality in general.
