oil filters
Let me see if I can distract you all from the dohickey question for
a minute. I recently purchased a used KLR 650. I love it. So, what
brand of oil filters seems to be the most popular with KLR riders?

Several brands of paper filters are available, and are cheaper than Kawi filters: Fram #CH6070; EMGO #10-30000; K&N #KN-123; Wix # 24951; NAPA #4951 (I believe that both the Wix and Napa filters are made by Wix). The Wix, Napa and Fram filters come with new O-rings, and the others do not. (If you are ordering from Dennis Kirk, the replacement O-ring is p/n 30-143.) There is also a lifetime stainless steel filter available, which you clean at each oil change. It's a bit pricey, and there is still some debate over which type of filter is better. The SS filter has a consistent filtration level; the paper filters vary from better to worse than the SS. Some people believe that paper filters shed fibers, that wind up clogging the oil strainer screen. However, it is more likely that this is clutch or gasket material. After 25k mi on my bike, there was no fibrous material in the strainer.

Prior to changing to the SS cleanable filter, I used the Fram CH6070 types purchased at a local auto store.
Personally, I believe all of them are OK to use, but frequent, regular oil/filter changes are the key to long engine life. The Manual indicates every 5,000 miles, but - IMHO - that's was too long. Mine gets changed every 2500-3000 miles. If you life/ride in dirty and/or dusty areas, I'd consider changing the oil and more frequently.
Oh yeah, the doohickey adjustment gets tweaked at the same time.

Anything but Fram! Those should never be used in any engine.

Emgo 10-30000
Kawasaki 16099-004
K&N KN123
Napa 4951
Wix 24951
One site listed thet Purolator ML16824 as compatible.

A few months ago the counter guy at my local Napa store told me the same
thing so we looked at the Fram, Wix, and Napa filters and found they were
absolutely identical right down to having both Fram and Wix part #'s on the filter
itself. It was obvious that they were the same product in different boxes.
So if you dislike Fram that much you should also avoid the Wix and Napa
products.

An opinion, at best.
I, and other, have never had any problems with Fram filters, specifically the ones (CH6012) used in my former '86 (86K miles), and my present '95 (107K mile) Connie.
The spin-on types used on earlier Wings had problems, and due to that the rumor mill persists that ALL Fram filters are taboo.
Change the oil and filter on, or before, the recomended interval, and you will not have any problems.

oil filters
Thanks for all the input on oil filters. As to the person who
suggested I replace my dohickey, I had already made up my mind to do
that before starting out on my summer adventures (I teach school).
I agree with those who suggest $50 or $60 to guard against a known
risk, even though the risk is quite low, is a wise expenditure.

Yes, Mark, you are right that filters and oil go best in the engine.
However, since the rider, not the motorcycle, makes the
selection, "popularity" has to do with the buyer. My question was
which is the most popular with KLR riders. As a secretary from a
former life used to tell me, "Mr. Grove, every body loves a little
ass, but nobody loves a smart ass."

of them for under $5.
I have them comin into Oreily and Palace auto, but dam, it's like
