second set of wheels

Post by sylvain gilbert » Sun Jul 11, 2010 7:57 am

I have a 2008 KLR which is my 3rd KLR. Since my riding ranges from HWY to off road, I'm considering purchasing a complete set of wheels with brake disc and sprocket for quick exchange in order to mainly save my off road tires from wearing off on pavement and also improve on road handling/comfort. Anyone from the group whith experience on this topic. 1- What about cast wheels from another model for on-road set up ? 2- Any aftermarket availibility as the OEM set up is very expensive 3- Yes, I know about ebay but again very expensive if you compare to other wheels listed Any input would be appreciated ;-) Sylvain 2008 KLR 685 2000 Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa turbo 1977 Can-Am 175 Qualifier 1976 Honda XL100 1972 Honda SL70 and still seaching....

Sylvain, DON'T bother - run your Can-Am 175 for any trail riding! Cheers, Ed

I did quite a bit of reading. I wanted to put tubless wheels on my bike for riding to and from work. It's expensive from what I found, with alot of custom machining. There is a company in Australia that is putting cast wheels on KLR's but the name escapes me at the moment. My .02 would be to buy wheels off a salvage bike (or even the whole bike) that arent bent, it'll cost less then aftermarket. And I'm not even sure there is an aftermarket hub for the KLR. -Rich in Newberg OR

second set of wheels

I would just look about for a spare set of standard wheels. Though I would take a look at what fits similar bikes such as the KLE[1]. I have never understood the lust for tubless, they are slightly easier to fix at the roadside but most bike shop (UK) wont plug tyres on bikes because of elf and safety. I've only had 3 or 4 punctures one bikes over the years, and I ride off road a fair bit. If money was no object then I would be tempted to have a set of supermotard rims. [1]EBC list the disc on the rear for the KLR, using that as a guide I would assume the rear wheel from all these should fit. KLE 500 A1-A12/B1 91-05 230 KLE 500 B1P/B6F/B7F 05-07 KL 650 B1-B3 Tengai 89-92 KLR 650 A1-A3 87-89 KLR 650 C1-C10 95-04 Front wheel is a bit more limited, KL 650 B1-B3 Tengai 89-92 280 KLR 650 C1-C10 95-04 Jack Stringer

#ygrps-yiv-1441335856 p {margin:0;}For safety's sake: If you get a puncture in the TREAD of a tubeless tire, the only safe and correct repair method is to dismount the tire and place a patch on the inside.  -Jeff Khoury

For me, it's not lusting after tubeless, more for the alloy 17/18" front wheel and street tires for the street and a good ol' set of D606's on my spoked rims. But, I've got too many hobbies and not enough money... and no one to ride with in my area (yet) so I spend all my time in and money on my 4x4 instead... so it's got street biased tires on it now. -Rich in newberg OR (Who just got his plates today!)

Nobody to ride with? Grow your own! They can be real handy as well.... The one I grew, cough, helped me pick up my bike on Sunday...after I stopped to coach him on the 'line' he was picking; instead my bike decided to take a nap while I was getting off of it--then I 'coached' him on what line to pick. red-face w smile. He is 14y7m. ~5-11, 160lbs. and he loves KLR's. We logged 175 miles on Sunday. =$22.47 gas One bike-nap. =a red face Time with the kid. yeah, priceless. Hopefully tomorrow, 100 miles of gravel-conditioning. revmaaatin. who now 'looks-up' to his kid and lives two blocks from gravel-road heaven.
