Hello Bum. The stock late model jet needle ( I don't know the year
modified ) doesn't have grooves in it to accommodate a cir-clip. It just has
a little cap that holds it centered in its white plastic holder. That's why
you need the little brass spacer, to center the needle. I think the
replacement needle comes out of the KLX but since I don't have a parts book
for that model, I cant be sure. Call your local friendly Kawasaki dealer and
ask him. It is still a good part number I do know that. Yours, Terry

Probably an old topic for you all- but. I just sold my '00 R1 and
bought a '00 KLR (Family Truckster). It was original with 750 miles
so I put on a Supertrapp, drilled the heck out of the airbox, and put
in a Dynojet kit. I put in the large main and put the needle in the
middle (live in Montgomery, AL by the way at 150' above sea level).
Sound right? Seems right. I also ordered a 16t countershaft to match
with the 43 rear. However, it seems I've seen messages about a 39t
stock rear. Did they change at some point? I also put on an Emigo
trunk. Now have a top speed (still with stock gearing) of 100mph. Is
that the best I can expect?
Love the bike. After 15,000 miles on an R1 this thing feels like a
Cadillac that corners. In my test corner I can maintain the same
speed on the Truckster that I could on the R1, though I'm sure that
at fast corners there is no comparison. For real world this thing
seems hard to beat. In the past 5 years I've owned 6 other street
bikes of the sport nature and this thing is the cheapest, most
comfortable, most fun at real world speeds, and will probably be the
warmest this winter. I waited too long.

I'm running the quiet baffle with only 8 discs,even then it's far from quiet, but I have also have the airbox box snorkle removed and 5- 1"holes drilled in the box, on top. I'm running the air-screw out 3 turns, 42 pilot jet, 4 - 5mm washers under the needle and a 155 main. I also drilled the hole in the slide to 1/8". I have excellent throttle responce and no lean-surge, which I finally cured when I went to the 155 main. I'd try closeto this for a start,but with a 160 main. Hope this help[s, Dave A12

I just replaced my 2006 klr stock pipe with a Big Gun exhaust and i am
looking re jet with a Dynojet kit. looking for help. any websites the

Looking for a little advice on my KLR600 (same carb as yours). I
just finished changing the valve stem seals which started to leak, I
think, because it ran too hot last fall.
I bought the bike from someone who didn't know a lot about it and
who rode it very little due to many problems. It came with a
Supertrap with 6 disks and a K&N pod. Carb had a 138 main which
turned out to be a Dynojet 138 (apparently equivalent to about a 145
Keihn, although I didn't know at the time) and stock needle
setting. It was very hard to start and seemed to run OK but got
very hot.
Late fall, I bought a used carb from a member of this list. It was
nice and clean and completely stock (Keihn 138 main). The bike ran
very poorly with it. I consulted the Dynojet website and put in a
Dynojet 150 (similar to Keihn 165) and turned out the pilot screw
from 1.5 turns to 3 turns. I did't buy their needle, instead,
raised the one I had .020". It was then easy to start and would run
well except just above idle where it would hickup a bit, however the
plug was white over the whole range of throttle openings.
Then, I raised the needle with .070" of shims and backed the pilot
screw to 3.75 turns (it won't come out too much more before it just
drops out). It is now running well and is easy to start but the
plug shows no color on repeated plug chops. Finally I removed 1 of
the 6 plates from the Supertrap - no improvement.
I don't want to have to replce more valve stem seals. Can anyone
give me any advice on what I should try next? How much larger
should I go on the main?, How much higher on the needle? Are bigger
idle jets available?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Hal, can't really be of much help with specific jet sizes with a KLR carb, mine at this point is still stock but one thing to be aware of and I hope this is accurate, someone else on the list or a search of the web should be able to confirm it, but anyway plug color unless it's black and sooty of course isn't much help when you are dealing with todays unleaded gas. I'm not sure if it's the lack of lead or something else but my understanding is as long as the plug isn't black with soot it will simply be light grey. What this means I is unless you have someway to analyze the exhaust you are stuck with trial and error and seat of the pants testing.
