Hey all, I've had this issue for a while and not sure if I should be concerned. When I tried to start my bike after it sits (inside) all winter, it's like the clutch is engaged when I hold the lever down. It lurches with the starter and I have to hold the brake. Doesn't make difference what gear (or neutral) Once started and running for a couple of minutes i can let off the brake. Is something to tight or what? Doesn't repeat it self during the day but if it sits a day or two it happens. TIA Spawned Out Fairbanks AK

#ygrps-yiv-1010143780 p {margin:0;}Good morning, This is fairly common and nothing to be worried about.  Clutches have alternating plates: steel, fiber, steel, fiber and so on.  When the clutch is engaged, a group of springs presses this "pack" together tightly so that the friction connects the engine to the transmission.  When you disengage the clutch you remove the spring pressure and the plates slide freely. When a bike sits, these plates can get sticky due to overheated oil residue on the surface of the plates and the pack will stick together.  When you first pop it in to gear, the engine will break them free and they will slip normally but the bike may lurch a bit.  This is all completely normal and nothing to worry about.  Mine does it every morning when I go to work, but does not do it throughout the day. If it really bothers you you can replace your clutch plates, and be mindful not to slip it too much.  This will lessen the buildup of the sticky stuff on the plates.  You could also try taking it apart and cleaning the plates with a solvent to remove the residue, but I'd just be mindful of the behaviour. There is also a slight chance of a mis-adjustment of your clutch lever, but I'm pretty sure that's not the case.  To check free play: Release the clutch lever and pull it back to where you juuuuust start to feel tension on the cable.  The gap between the lever and the housing should be about the width of a penny.  Any less could cause your clutch to slip and have a premature death.  Any more and it may not fully disengage. -Jeff Khoury

You can limit the severity of the clunk by rocking the bike back and forth in gear BEFORE you start it to help break the clutch plates free. This is relatively normal but when it gets really bad, it may just be time to change the oil. da Vermonster
