Hi don't want to buy your bike but i see you have the 42 pilot and the 160 main which is what I'm going to with my K&N and modified air box,so my question is how does it run and what are you getting for gas mileage and is this based on Marks Carb Mods forum.                                                     Thanks Stu. Stu My experience is; the 42/160 is a bit rich, try the 42, a bump to 150 main and a needle shimed .020-.030. I have an engine that is highly moded and I only run a 158 main in it, but it is ported, big valves etc. If you have access to a dyno and a good dyno tuner, that is the best way to go. I have seen some dyno data, and the improvements, no matter what you do, seem to be very small. Here is what dynojet shows us: http://www.dynojet.com/pdf/2144.pdf Now for my analysis - All of those spikes have got to be B.S. It is either the clutch or the tire slipping and then locking up. So just disregard the spikes entirely. First gear is the only one worth looking at, but since the motor is the same in all gears, that's good enough. What do we get? 5 HP. That's it. Now, I realize that 5 HP is more than 10%, so we should be happy, I guess, but 10% is going to be pretty hard to feel (OK, you can feel it, probably) but 5 HP is not enough to matter much in the real world, is it? Thomas, I appreciate hearing your experience. With porting, big valves, and other mods, what do you end up with, and does it become so peaky that lower RPM torque suffers badly? I'd like to know. Actually, it runs just as good down low and much better on top. It is not a real power house, but I did get almost 50 Hp out of it. Is it worth it? If I wasn't able to do my own work, no, but because I can, it has been a fun project. It kicks some serious booty at Barber when I take it there. Chris, I have not read to the end of the thread; apologies if someone else suggested this already... Are the cams in 'time'? Is the dohickey adjusted properly? When I picked up a 20K mile, 1998 new to me KLR650 in 5/08, the bike was buzzier than my 01. During the tec day following the trip home, we discovered the the exhaust was one tooth out of proper timing with the intake cam. Will it make it buzzier? shrug. Could be. Certainly won't make it smoother. I know that after nearly 2K miles of riding it from Dallas, Texas to central SD via Omaha, etal, then onward to a Rapid City tec day (ride in the snow, or wrench...) --valves checked and the dohickey upgraded to a torsion spring, the bike was seat-of-the pants smoother, and mechanically quieter. shrug.... seemed so to me. It also had the protaper bars installed by the PO. All those items have some bearing on the vibes. Gel grips = good farkle as well. revmaaatin.
