lighter klr?
It has been said that the KLR bikes are "too heavy". Although the easiest way to have a lighter rig is for me to lose 10 kg myself, barring that, I'm curious what might be done to cut weight. And yes, I know that I'm going to pack other gear on there and the weight is going up on any trip, but are there ways to cut weight that people have been successful with, and could endorse. I'm thinking of things like:
Lighter swingarm - Yes, it's custom and there are very few who make them, but the swingarm is a big piece. Here is a company that does swingarms, but they don't answer their e-mail: http://www.bbrmotorsports.com/Home/Home.aspx Has anybody even seen a lightweight KLR swingarm?
Lighter frame - Not gonna happen.
Lighter water - No, probably not.
Lighter exhaust system - Any recommendations here? My research indicates that exhaust systems don't add much power or torque, but lighter is good. Any recommendations on that approach?
Lighter rack - Take it off? Aluminium?
Lighter forks - Any recommendations that won't break the bank?
Lighter tank - This has merit, but the gas weighs LOTS more than the tank.
OK, that's my list. Has anybody tried to lighten up? Any ideas? Other than "Buy a 250" of course...

Re: [DSN_KLR650] Lighter KLR? These mods are all free: Toss all bodywork except fenders Toss lower rear fender, relocate license plate Toss turn signal stalks. Toss passenger pegs & peg mounts Trim grab handles off rear rack Toss plastic fake chain slider under swingarm at rear sprocket Toss one mirror Toss sidestand safety switch and plastic cover Toss airbox or modify air intake system Toss the useless intake baffle that looks like a tool holder Toss any California emissions crap Run the stock "skidplate" or lose it altogether. Unzip exhaust can, remove some guts and re-weld Run only 3-4 gal of gas
I did a lot of these mods back when I had my KLR650 woods thrash-o-matic insect fogger. Mark

Don't forget to release some of the air out of the tires.

Let it all out and replace it with helium..... but then you'd have to add weight to keep it from floating away.... tom

My GS was lighter but it cost many many thousands more. As far as the KLR goes apart from the lighter exaust system everything you can possibly do doesnt add up to much.
That said the larger half of us on this list could loose20+ Kilos by just changing diet and going for a walk each day.
Short version is buy a carbon exaust and invest the rest in a pair of good walking shoes and some salad fixins! You will save your money and live to ride for many more years

Excellent suggestions, Mark!
What is the "useless intake baffle"? Where is it? Is it that perforated plate under the headlight? Is that it?

I have been looking at exhaust systems, and I am getting closer to Vance&Hines.
What carbon exhaust do you recommend?

Swap the fairing stay bracket/mount, cowl/fairing and rear fender for a KL600,KLR250 or Sherpa style. These units weigh a bit less... and loose the OEM toolbox/tools in favor of a bag with actual tools. I drop the bag in the mouth of the trail for serious bashing.
Aluminum handle bars.
The newer KLRs have aluminum radiators instead of steel and copper.
Go on a diet and use helium in your tubes...

help with buying first gear coat - have nice leather coat for sale
New Enough has a woman's Kilmangaro coat at close out, but it is a woman's. What is the difference in it and a man's coat? My Kilmangaro coat was lifted off my bike and I really miss it. It was getting old and faded but was still useful.
Anyone have a medium for sale with or without the liner? My liner was not in the coat, so I still have it.
While we are dealing, anyone need a really nice heavy leather coat with lots of zippers, liner and gun pocket. This sold for over $400.00. I bought it when I was riding a highway bike. Now that I don't have it and ride a KLR I don't use it. Will sell or trade. Can send pics.
