I'm new to the list so please forgive me if this has been talked about. I did a search and didn't find anything on it. My question is this, has anyone experienced the boiling gas in your KLR's tank on warm days in traffic? Here is what happened to me. I was going to go furniture shopping with my brother, I was on my KLR and he was on his bike. We hit some rush hour traffic and it was about 90 degrees or more that day. As we rode (about 45min or more) I noticed some noise coming from my gas tank when I got off. I openned the tank to release some of the pressure... didn't seem to help. The bike wasn't too warm at the time but warm enough. So we stopped for a bit at my brother's place (half way between work and the furniture store) and then jumped back on the bikes to continue the adventure. Well, as we were driving down the road, we hit some more traffic and my temp gauge was getting pretty warm on my KLR. We decided to pull off the side of the road and let the bike cool a bit. I got off the bike and took off my helmet. Again, I noticed the noise from the tank... this time a little louder. I, being the idiot that I was, went to the tank and openned it. Startled, I jumped backwards as a fountain of gas came spewing out of the tank. It shot up about a foot or more out of the tanks openning. Luckily I wasn't sitting on it but I did get a few drops in my face. I'd say it spewed gas for about 2 seconds or so. I had almost a full tank of gas and it probably spit about 1/4 tank of gas at me. Anyway, I wiped it off closed up the tank and let it cool then jumped back on swearing never to open the tank again. Anyone have a similar thing happen to them? Is my tank defective or is this the way KLRs/Kawasaki makes their bikes, without a pressure release hose or valve? BTW, my KLR is a 2000 and has about 13k miles on it. I live in Minnesota, MN. To me, the idea of gas 4-6 gallons of gas boiling between my legs is very nerve racking.... call me strange. -jason

Hey Jason, Well, I've heard of gas tank noises, mine makes noises too, but I have not heard of a story like that! Gas does expand as the tank/gas get heated, but damn, I don't know what to tell you. Did you check your tank breather line, or the breather air holes in the tank cap, to see if they are clogged? I would guess that one of those is the problem. MrMoose A8 (Barbie and Ken special)

Maybe the cooling fan isn't working, and the radiator/engine heat is affecting the bottom of the tank. Jason, You don't say when this happened, but I suspect you are talking about early summer and may have had some winter grade gasoline in the tank. You get winter grade with 15 lb. vapor pressure from September 15 through March 31. Summer grade in your area is 9 lb. You were ridding slow on a warm day using little fuel, but putting a great deal of heat into the fuel tank, then when you stopped to cool the bike, you put more heat into the tank without removing any fuel. The bottom of the fuel tank is bare metal directly above the hot motor so the fuel gets hotter as the motor cools down. Even with summer grade fuel, it will boil if you put enough heat into it. No, your tank and gas cap are not defective. There is a vent hose you will see when you remove the seat. To avoid this situation, don't fill the tank all the way. Allan A14 81,000 miles

My 02 did this the other day. About 92 F outside. Rode 40 miles home from work and parked it in the garage. Walked down to get the mail and when I reentered the garage I heard a hissing noise. Opened gas cap and hissing stopped. A minute later it started again. On board thermometer was reading 104 F. Never did this before that I know of. ---- donleehall wrote:
