adjusting rear brake pedal play

Post by Jeff Hartman » Mon Mar 22, 2010 1:55 am

Hi, I have almost 1 inch of play in my KLR's brake pedal before the brake light comes on, and the brake engages. Perhaps it is closer to 3/4 inch. Any suggestions for reducing that play to something closer to 1/2  inch?  I wear MX boots and they prevent the flexibility I want to get quick brake light response and sufficient force applied to the rear brake.  Thanks, Jeff Hartman Juneau, AK 95 KLR

Jeff,   There is no free-play adjustment in your rear brakes but there is an adjustment for the pedal ride height.  You can remove the pin and loosen the clevis to change the height slightly of your brake pedal.  Be sure that your brakes are bled and you have no air in your brake system.  I have seen some KLRs that have had additional spacers bolted to the brake pedal to raise the ride height, but I don't like adding mechanical complexity to a life saving device.  Error on the safe side when it comes to brakes, etc.  You only have one and you never know when you are going to need it 100%. Jeff, I added a 3/4" piece of aluminum (piece of a ski pole) on top of the pedal which means you get braking before your foot goes near vertical. Ed

Is there not a turnbuckle style adjuster on that rear pedal ? Did'nt go look... was thinking it was adjustable. Mine engages down a bit but I left it there, was fine for me. Also I think the switch for the light is adjustable also. Fuzzy memory from winter. Dooden A15 Green Ape

adjusting rear brake pedal play

I guess along with being vertically challenged, my wife and I are short footed. So I went to the hardware store and bought a bolt, nuts and some washers, and put them through the brake pedal. Similar to Jeff's piece of aluminum. Now, we also, don't have our foot go vertical to engage the brake.
